We’ve been keeping up with all the casting tidbits we’ve been hearing about the upcoming American Gods series at Starz. Now, we’re starting to see how all that casting has come together, and it is beautiful.
Entertainment Weekly posted these exclusive images from the set of American Gods, and did an interview with its showrunner, Bryan Fuller. The photo up top features Shadow, played by The 100‘s Ricky Whittle, fighting Mad Sweeney, played by Orange is the New Black‘s Pablo Schreiber in the iconic scene from the Neil Gaiman novel where Shadow first proves himself as capable of hanging with gods at Jack’s Crocodile Bar.
Says Fuller, “It was one of the sets that we were the most excited about and an opportunity to do a tonal landgrab for what we are and what the style of the show will be. [Jack’s] is a kind of hillbilly chic aesthetic for Shadow’s entrée into the world of the gods.”
Meanwhile, EW has another photo showing Ian McShane in the role of Mr. Wednesday. Fuller promises that fans can expect the same type of morbid humor from the character that was displayed in the novel. He says, “I think the comedy and charm and ease of Wednesday’s appeal is very well-suited for Ian McShane. He has a vibrancy as Wednesday that could have gone so many different ways in other actors’ hands, but has such a specificity and reality, despite the situation at hand.”
From the cast, to the creators, to the look of this set, American Gods is shaping up to be something truly epic. I can’t wait for the show to drop in 2017!
