RUMOR: Katherine Waterson’s Role in Alien: Covenant Reportedly Revealed

Big ol’ spoiler warning right here for you. Not even kidding. Don’t say I didn’t warn you, champ.

This morning saw a pretty interesting, fairly tumultuous time regarding Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien: Covenant flick. Apparently a pretty hefty spoiler hit the internet that revealed Katherine Waterston’s role and its (again, seriously, spoiler) connection to the original Alien movies. Originally appearing on the Playlist, the spoiler was apparently taken down by request from the studio itself. Note that this neither confirms nor denies the spoiler, as it’s possible they just don’t want people to be confused by possible misinformation.

The spoiler, though, is that , which, if true, teases a pretty strong connection to those original movies. It’s no secret that this movie in particular would directly connect to the Alien movies in some way; Scott said so himself. The idea was that Alien: Covenant would be the first in a trilogy of movies that directly lead up to the events of Alien, as opposed to a fairly distant prequel like Prometheus.

I think it’d be interesting to see this play out if it proves to be true. Granted, I’m an unabashed Ripley fan, as she’s one of my personal heroes. I mean, come on. Saves planets, has a cat, and isn’t afraid of anything. What’s not to love? So, seeing some connection to her would be really nice. But the Alien universe is one that’s really hit or miss with its in-universe references. Sometimes it does well in subtly reminding you that you’re watching a movie that takes place in one massive universe, while other times it kind of really beats you over the head with it.

Obviously it’s way too early to have any real reaction to this, so take this all as speculation and rumor. We’ll find out what’s up with Waterston’s role when Alien: Covenant hits theaters next August.
