Real Talk: The Mary Sue Needs You to Subscribe

Do you enjoy The Mary Sue? Do you have $5 a month to invest in meaningful geek feminist content, in exchange for some pretty sweet perks? Then we’re here to ask you to please consider subscribing. The Mary Sue needs your help.

As our founder, Dan Abrams, wrote last month,

Since I launched this site in 2011, it has never been profitable. It has lost money, sometimes quite a bit, every year of its existence. I say this not to engender sympathy—because I deserve none—but to present a reality of where we are.

That reality is that we need those of you who enjoy our content and can spare $4.99 a month (or $3.99, if you subscribe annually) to show your support by subscribing. We want to keep The Mary Sue accessible to everyone, we want to pay all of our contributors, and we’ve done all we can to create a subscription model that won’t exclude readers who can’t subscribe. But for that to work, we still need more subscribers.

The Mary Sue has never had outside investors and contends daily with the impact ad blockers have on the success of our ad campaigns. The good news is that you can help us be sustainableand get yourself some rad perks along the way. Subscribing to The Mary Sue gets you:

  • A totally ad-free site!
  • Monthly live chats with The Mary Sue editors!
  • A subscription only newsletter with behind the scenes info and links to other sites’ stories we are loving each weekday!

If The Mary Sue has ever helped you, inspired you, or entertained you, and you can afford it, we truly hope you’ll consider subscribing. We believe in the importance of this community—in fact, we live it—but our belief alone can’t allow us to cover the sorts of stories we want to without focusing more on typical internet click bait. If The Mary Sue is important to you, and you have the money to spare, we would appreciate your support.

The Mary Sue has a strict comment policy that forbids, but is not limited to, personal insults toward anyone, hate speech, and trolling.—
