I knew I couldn’t be the only American Whovian whose brain constantly went to the “Who’s on First?” place when thinking about Doctor Who. In a recent promo for The Late Show, Stephen Colbert and guest David Tennant get into a wonderfully confusing chat about a role that Tennant is famous for. Check it out above.
Tennant was on The Late Show promoting his current run as Richard II at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and after the comedic shenanigans above, he went on to discuss with Colbert why Shakespeare is still so important today. He also could care less who “really” wrote Shakespeare’s plays. The point, to him, is that they exist and that they’re brilliant, though he and Colbert do talk about the theories behind why someone would hide the fact that they wrote such amazing work and hide behind the identity of some hack actor:
But really, it was all about “Who’s” on First? And in case you didn’t know, that sketch is based on the classic Abbott and Costello routine which, if you haven’t seen it, you really should. Here’s my favorite version of it. This comedy classic still holds up decades later.
I have to say, once Tennant gets Richard II out of his system, I really hope he does more comedy. He’s kind of amazing at it.
