Independence Day: Resurgence Could Allow More Sequels To Invade Theaters

At least, so sayeth Jeff Goldblum.

The new Independence Day movie isn’t even out yet, and already sequel talk is a thing that’s happening. There’s every possibility that the studio, the stars, the director, whoever–is banking on optimism that the film will do well, and a good portion of that is likely attributed to the nostalgia among fans in the twenty years since the original Independence Day‘s release. Apparently, those behind Resurgence are also considering this a test run to see if there’s any potential to turn this into a multi-movie franchise.

In an interview with the some of the Resurgence cast, actors like Maika Monroe and Jeff Goldblum alluded to the possibility that the new film would expand the known in-movie universe and introduce new alien species for Earth to encounter. Goldblum also said that Resurgence will possibly leave the door open for a third return–or even more:

“I think what they have in mind is that if this is well enjoyed, then they have some ideas. And there may even be an artful reference towards the end of the movie of what could [happen next]. It sets up the possibility that it’s not over – that the fat lady has not yet sung.”

I’ll always be a little partial to the alien race who invaded Earth only to get punched in the face by Will Smith and possess Brent Spiner for a time, but I’d be interested to see how the film approaches the potential to bring in other alien races–because of course there would be more than one species if we’re not alone out there after all.
