Lauren Graham and Melissa McCarthy in Gilmore Girls

Not a Drill: Melissa McCarthy Will Return to Gilmore Girls After All

Am I crying or laughing?

The Gilmore Girls revival is the kind of TV event you dream about but never expect to actually get. That made it a little easier to swallow the idea of Melissa McCarthy not returning as Sookie St. James, Lorelai’s best friend, business partner (so kind of a big deal), and general delight, but it was still disappointing. That’s why we’re so glad she’s finally officially on board.

If you haven’t been following along, hanging on every tiny tidbit of news (don’t judge), there was some confusion over McCarthy’s return—not just for fans, but for those involved in the revival, it seemed. An interview with GG creator Amy Sherman-Palladino made it sound like McCarthy was just too busy, but then, the actor herself tweeted that she’d never actually been asked. Unfortunately, by the time everyone got their communication straight, she was too busy—what with being a huge movie star and all—but no more! She announced on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that they’d just, within hours, worked out her return to Stars Hollow.

Sherman-Palladino had previously mentioned that they had something planned for her in the event that she did become available, which should make her inclusion relatively late in production a bit easier. There’s still no firm date for the revival’s Netflix release, but they’re shooting until May 10th, so hopefully we’ll know more in the near future. For now, we’ll have to be content with news of McCarthy’s return alongside some of the first official images to come out of the production. Be warned: if you don’t want to know anything remotely spoilery, don’t check out Entertainment Weekly’s images and details, which give away what Rory’s been up to lately, along with some other major characters.

Now, commence celebration.
