Zack Snyder’s bombastic opus did successfully revive public interest in two people—just not Bruce Wayne or Clark Kent.
Soon after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s release, an interviewer asked stars Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck how they felt about the film’s less-than-enthusiastic critical reception. Cavill quickly responded by putting a positive spin on the reviews, while Affleck just stared silently into the distance. A fan video of Affleck’s hopeless expression set to Simon & Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence” quickly went viral:
Now, The Independent reports that the Sad Affleck video has spurred somewhat of a Simon & Garfunkel renaissance. 50 years after it was initially released, “The Sound of Silence” has returned to Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs chart—Simon & Garfunkel’s rendition has landed at number 6 on the chart, while heavy metal band Disturbed’s cover of the song enjoys the number 3 spot. At 5.6 million streams, “The Sound of Silence” is also currently the second-most streamed song in the U.S.. It might be worth noting that Dawn of Justice isn’t the first film to help popularize Simon & Garfunkel—“Sound of Silence” was also featured in The Graduate, which is the first and last time those two movies will be mentioned in the same sentence.
I feel more than a little sorry for Ben Affleck about all of this, but I’m also confident he’ll land on his feet. Dawn of Justice wasn’t his fault—I actually kinda liked him as Bruce Wayne—so hopefully the solo Batman movie he’s reportedly working on can cleanse our collective palate of DoJ‘s sweaty, bloody aftertaste. After all, (Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and) time heals all wounds.
