The Mario Kart series is home to plenty of ridiculous racing locations, but “the deck of a cruise ship” may be one of the ones that felt least likely to ever happen, next to “on a rainbow in space.” (For real, that is not how rainbows work.) However, it appears that we should never underestimate the absurdity of giant, floating hotels as Norwegian Cruise Lines prepares the SS Mario Kart.
OK, the new, mammoth cruise ship is really called Joy, but it does feature a go kart racetrack that will almost certainly bring back fond memories of the Daisy Cruiser from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! on the GameCube. Unfortunately, you’ll be confined to a closed course and unable to make a full loop around the deck, up and down the stairs, and through the dining and pool areas, but the other guests will probably appreciate that in the long run.
The Joy will also come with other amenities in the increasingly ridiculous cruise line arms race that ride the line between boat and theme park, including hovering bumper cars, virtual reality experiences, and a 360-foot water slide that will dangle you over the ocean off the side of the boat. The Joy hits the seas in 2017 on a route heading out of either Shanghai or Beijing, so practice your snaking (that works in real life, right?) and plan your kart racing dreams accordingly. Just watch out for those blue shells.
