J.J. Abrams Explained How His Wife Got Him to Give Up on Lens Flares

Recommended Videos

J.J. Abrams loved him some lens flares, yes he did, yes he did. In fact, while you read this post, go ahead and blink a few times. Pretend there’s some really dramatic lens flares peeking between the lines. Okay? Good. Anyway, Abrams was on Late Show last night promoting 10 Cloverfield Lane. Before they settled into that, though, host Stephen Colbert brought up a conversation they had regarding Abrams’ devotion to the flare. More specifically, they chatted about how it was Abrams’ wife, Katie McGrath, who told him to knock it off with all the flares.

In response to Colbert bringing it up, Abrams said, “Well, Katie’s told me to stop a lot of things… but lens flares, I was like, okay. She was right.” He brought up an example, citing a scene in Star Trek: Into Darkness, saying, “There was one scene where you literally couldn’t see what was going on, and it was a very important, emotional scene. Alice Eve, the actress, was somewhere behind this crazy lens flare, going… and Katie looked at me and said, okay, I think this is it.”

Check out the clip above to see it for yourself. Also note how damned charming Abrams is while explaining the story. That man knows how to disarm a crowd for sure.
