Tumblr to Host Feminism-Focused SXSW Event, Featuring Crystal Castles, Jhene Aiko, and More

Recommended Videos

Apparently at last year’s SXSW Music, Tumblr made quite the impact with its massive, multi-day party. Now, they’re returning to the festival, and this year’s governing focus is on feminism. It’s called the “79 Cents event,” which is a direct reference to the wage gap between women and men that still exists today (despite what the seals are sure to say in the comments).

Tumblr looks to be promoting the work of mostly female musicians, artists, and Tumblr celebrities. Some specific music talents include: Jhene Aiko, Tacocat, Empress Of, Little Simz, and Crystal Castles. The artist behind the ever-popular Tumblr art blog Animated Text will also be present, creating “feminist art installations” along with more than a few collaborators. The special guest for the evening will be none other than former senator Wendy Davis, who garnered a reputation as a bit of a feminist icon for her 11-hour filibuster of a bill that would have restricted abortion in Texas.

If you’re heading to SXSW, this event seems like one that you should definitely check out. It’s free, but it is only for guests 21 and over. Sorry, younger ones: this might be one you’ll have to miss out on.

Plus, just take a look between the lines of the flyer: “A woman’s place / is on the stage / to the front / and wherever she wants.” It’s just so appropriately everything.
