We were already pretty psyched about the news that Bryan Fuller would be the showrunner on the first new Star Trek series in over a decade–especially since he’s brought up ideas like #CaptainAngelaBassett. Now, it seems that he’s landed some pretty heavy-hitting talent that also happens to be very familiar with the Star Trek universe.
Writer Nicholas Meyer will be joining the Star Trek writing staff as a writer and consulting producer, working alongside Fuller and Alex Kurtzman. Meyer has a long history with Star Trek, having written and directed not only Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, but also 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. In addition, he wrote 1986’s Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
As a longtime fan of Star Trek, when I first heard this news, I thought it was really cool! But then I realized that every single name associated with this project so far (save Angela Bassett – c’mon, that’s a real thing that’s actually gonna happen, right?) has been male and white. *sigh*
This is a show about the future. A show about a time when, supposedly, we’ve moved past all these silly gender/race/class issues as a species. I hope that the folks at CBS Access remember this as they move forward with this project, and that they spend as much time prioritizing diversity behind the camera as they may what’s in front of it.
