This Season, Listen to A Christmas Carol as Read in Neil Gaiman’s Dulcet Tones

Recommended Videos

Obviously, we love Neil Gaiman for his awesome stories – the worlds he builds and the characters he creates. But equally awesome about Gaiman is the way he reads those stories. If you’ve been lucky enough to go to any Neil Gaiman reading or event (or have watched them on YouTube, or bought one of his self-narrated audio books), you know what I’m talking about. And no, it’s not just ’cause he’s British, as there are plenty of British people whose voices I’d never want reading me bedtime stories.

Anyway, as part of a New York Public Library event, Neil Gaiman reads A Christmas Carol – and he’s reading from Charles Dickens’ rare copy of the story, which is part of the NYPL’s archive and includes edits and prompts Dickens wrote in his own handwriting for his own public readings 150 years ago. While reading at the live event, Gaiman was dressed in period costume and joined by writer and BBC researcher Molly Oldfield to perform the story exactly as Dickens intended.

And thanks to the wonders of the internet, we have the recording to listen to and bust out every holiday season. So sit back, relax, and let Neil Gaiman take you on a Christmas adventure.

And while you’re at it, if you’re in the spirit of giving, think about supporting The New York Public Library! They do awesome stuff, and are kind of a big deal if you love books.
