Marvel Wants Creed‘s Ryan Coogler To Direct Black Panther

This is a brilliant, brilliant idea.

There’s been a lot of buzz around the character of Black Panther–from his recent appearance on the cover of Entertainment Weekly alongside Iron Man and Captain America to the exciting announcement earlier this year that author Ta-Nehisi Coates will be writing the character’s latest comic book arc.

We were a little disappointed when we learned that Ava DuVernay had decided to decline directing the film, but this latest news coming down the pipeline is certainly intriguing–apparently, Marvel is now in talks with Ryan Coogler, the director of Fruitvale Station. His latest film, Creed, premiered last month to great critical and fan acclaim (we really liked it, too!).

From the sounds of things, Marvel appears to be trying to diversify the team working on the Black Panther movie, which is definitely what we want to see more of moving forward in terms of the film franchise. Hiring independent filmmakers to helm big superhero movies can bring a fresh take to a familiar story–and Coogler’s recent success isn’t hurting his chances one bit.

As of right now, there’s no official update of things being signed off on or officially agreed upon, but I’m seriously keeping my fingers crossed on this one. What are your feelings on the announcement?
