The only Star Wars film out of the existing six that has earned a PG-13 rating thus far is Revenge of the Sith–and now, The Force Awakens will share at least one thing in common with a Star Wars prequel, because it’ll be rated PG-13 as well. Why? The MPAA cited “sci-fi action violence” as the reasoning behind the chosen rating.
Seems like every other Star Wars flick has had “sci-fi action violence” in it, so what makes this one any different? We’ll have to wait and see. Regardless, I expect the cinema to be packed with audience members well under the age of 13, in spite of the fact that parents are “strongly cautioned” against allowing such activities.
There was some pretty scary stuff even in the PG-rated Star Wars films–remember that shot of Luke’s face in the beheaded Vader helmet? Nightmare fuel, if you ask me. Who could say what sorts of nightmares The Force Awakens will inspire?
