Female Artist Covers “Hotline Bling,” Flips the Script to Empower Women Instead of Shaming Them

Recommended Videos

It’s no secret. As, uh, notorious as Drake’s “Hotline Bling” has been, it’s actually a pretty needy and vaguely misogynistic song. The dude shames his ex-girlfriend for hanging out with other people now, and complains about how she doesn’t call him anymore–which, if someone talked to me like how Drake talks to his ex here, I wouldn’t call him either.

Enter Ceresia. This R&B artist covered “Hotline Bling,” but in her own way, singing from the perspective of the ex. She totally blasts the needy ex-boyfriend and completely owns the track.

See, I got a reputation for myself now
Everybody knows that you feel left out
Boy you had me down, you had me stressed out

You and me, we just don’t get along
You made me feel like I did you wrong
Goin’ places that you don’t belong

I love Drake as much as the next girl, but damn. This is fire. Or, to borrow from the youths’ vernacular: this is 100.

Ceresia isn’t alone in doing this by the way, oh no. You should head on over to Jezebel, where there are a bunch more female artists who completely make the track their own, too.
