I get that we’re all excited to see Harrison Ford reprise his role as Han Solo in The Force Awakens. I’m excited, too, but is that excitement causing us all to forget how disappointing Indiana Jones 4 was? It was pretty disappointing, as I recall, yet Ford just told EW that he’s 100% psyched about making more of Indy’s adventures:
Oh, yeah. Yeah, I’d love to do another Indiana Jones. A character that has a history and a potential, kind of a rollicking good movie ride for the audience, Steven Spielberg as a director — what’s not to like?
I want to like this, Harrison Ford. I want to like this idea, because you come off so well in the EW feature, and I know you like the character Indiana Jones. I even get why you’d like him. He’s a jerk, sure, but he’s also funny and smart! And you seem pretty likable, yourself!
But … I am not excited about Indiana Jones 5. I’m just not, man.
It’s not even that I don’t think a 73-year-old man can play an action hero anymore—that’s fine with me (although we sure don’t seem to see many women getting that opportunity, but whatever). It’s more that the fundamental concept of Indiana Jones just doesn’t seem like one that works anymore. There’s the casual racism of the original films, first of all, but also the broader message of cultural imperialism endemic to the films’ core conceit. Oh—and like I said—Crystal Skull wasn’t so entertaining from a narrative and artistic standpoint, either. So there’s that, too.
What do we think, folks? It does seem like we’ll get another Indiana Jones movie whether we want one or not, but let’s all pretend like we have power over this decision for a second.
