Disney Set to Remake-But-Not-Remake Mary Poppins

Apparently it's not a sequel, either?

Leave it to the flying nanny to try to defy all conventional definitions of “sequel” or “remake”. According to Entertainment Weekly, Disney is currently developing a completely brand new, original live-action musical featuring Mary Poppins. They’re careful to not use the word remake or sequel, instead skewing towards “new” and “original,” which could mean quite a few things.

For starters: holy crap, they might not get Julie Andrews in on this. That would be an absolute tragedy. But they do have the blessing of the P.L. Travers estate, as well as original composer Richard Sherman’s support. M… maybe that… that could mean it might be okay? Here’s hoping.

The film is set in Depression-era London, and won’t focus so much on Mary Poppins coming to take care of the kids as in the original movie. It’s said to focus on some of Travers’ later Poppins novels, which are about some further adventures Mary Poppins goes on with the Banks family.

Hm. Sounds like a sequel to me.
