Alan Tudyk’s upcoming satirical webseries, Con Man, had no problem crowdfunding. After all, how else are we going to get to see Tudyk and Nathan Fillion on a spaceship again? 46,000 fans raised $3.2 Million, allowing this show that was originally supposed to be three 10-minute episodes and maybe a book to be twelve episodes long. Eager fans filled Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday and were treated to the debut of the Con Man trailer, which you can see above!

Both written and directed by, as well as starring Tudyk, here’s an official synopsis of Con Man:

The series is a lighthearted take on the personalities, luminaries, comic book stores, and characters they have run into during their years in the sci-fi community and convention circuit, while telling the story of a guy learning to love and embrace his fans. CON MAN centers around the post-show life of Wray Nerely (Alan Tudyk), the pilot and co-star of SPECTRUM, a sci-fi series which was cancelled before it’s time and eventually became a cult classic beloved by fans. Wray’s good friend, Jack Moore (Nathan Fillion) starred in the series and has gone on to become a major celebrity, while Wray continued to struggle to find his big break. While Jack enjoys the life of an A-lister, Wray tours the sci-fi circuit as a guest of conventions, comic book stores, and lots of pop culture events. The show will explore all the weird and crazy things that happen to Wray along the way, while telling the story of a guy learning to love and embrace his fans.

Sounds like a familiar story, huh? As you can tell from the trailer, the show is chock full of awesome stars of genre TV and film, including Michael Trucco (Battlestar Galactica), Seth Green, Alison Haislip, Nolan North, Casper Van Dien, Tricia Helfer, Mindy Sterling, Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, Barry Bishop, and Sky Haarsma, who joined Tudyk, Fillion, and producer P.J. Haarsma on the Con Man panel. You’ll also spot additional Firefly cast cameos from people like Gina Torres and Sean Maher!

Con Man seems truly hilarious, and I’m really impressed with Tudyk’s style as a writer/director. However, along with the humor, I love that the show doesn’t seem to be afraid to delve into the negative feelings surrounding geek celebrity culture. It’s an honest, sometimes angry or sad look at things, but the tone never seems unduly harsh or unkind. After all, it’s about “a guy learning to love and embrace his fans,” and this project does seem to be full of love, even while depicting myriad annoyances (like dealing with someone who apparently thinks every cylon is The Hot Cylon on Battlestar Galactica).

I can’t wait for this series to debut on Vimeo on September 30th (PS – it’s available now for pre-order)!
