Behold What Could Have Been: A Super Nintendo PlayStation Console

Shuhei Yoshida sounds off on the news, as well.

Featured here is a bit of an archaic relic, a reminder of what could have been: a Super Nintendo/PlayStation concept console.

Time for a quick video game history lesson, y’all.

Way, way back in the 1990s, secret video game employees combined famous systems and CDs and made amusing combo consoles. Specifically, Nintendo and Sony tried out a partnership where they’d introduce CD-based media to the Super Nintendo console. After much back and forth (and hype), Nintendo abandoned the partnership, instead joining up with Sony’s rival, Phillips.

Sony went off to create the PlayStation 1, and the rest is history.

Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide president, shared his thoughts on a bit of video game history when Engadget writer Richard Lai asked him about the photos of the Super Nintendo/Sony PlayStation combo console that popped up on the internet recently. He didn’t exactly have an answer for whether the device shown was the real deal or not.

He only said, “Somehow, I think it’s more fun to keep it kind of a mystery.”
