They finally saw the light.

Before the behemoth that was Frozen, there was Tangled, an awesome, fun retelling of the story of Rapunzel and how she goes from sheltered secret-princess to independent, adventurous person. Now, the story of Tangled will continue in a longer form, as The Disney Channel has announced that they will be releasing a Tangled animated series set to debut in 2017. Even better? The original cast is set to star!

As reported by Collider:

Both Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, who voiced the film’s two leads, Rapunzel and Eugene, are returning for the show’s first season order at least. The season order from Disney sets the series premiere for 2017 on the Disney Channel, with Oscar-winning composer and long-time Disney mainstay Alan Menken reuniting with lyricist Glenn Slater on the project that last brought them together. The series is being developed and produced by Chris Sonnenburg, who produced the Amy Adams-lead Enchanted for Disney, and Shane Prigmore, hot off his success as a producer of The Lego Movie.

Two years is a long wait! But from the sound of the official synopsis, it sounds like it might be worth it:

Set between the events of the feature film and the start of the 2012 short film, Tangled Ever After, the animated series unfolds as Rapunzel acquaints herself with her parents, her kingdom and the people of Corona. Her irrepressible spirit and natural curiosity about the world drives her to the realization that there is so much more she needs to learn before she can truly accept her royal destiny. She boldly puts her crown and impending marriage on hold to seek out epic adventures, much to the dismay of the King who, after missing out on Rapunzel’s youth, must accept that his daughter is now an independent young woman. Accompanying Rapunzel on her journey will be Eugene; the plucky chameleon sidekick, Pascal; the no-nonsense horse, Maximus; the Snuggly Duckling Pub Thugs; and newcomer Cassandra, a tough-as-nails handmaiden, who becomes Rapunzel’s confidant.

It seems that the show puts the focus not only on Rapunzel learning more before rushing into a royal life, but that she also puts her marriage to Eugene on hold to spend time having adventures. Plus, female confidant, Cassandra. I’m totally diggin’ this!
