But still no History of The World Part II?
In case you’d assumed that the Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money joke in Mel Brooks’ original 1987 sci-fi parody was just a throwaway gag, know that you are mistaken: Brooks announced on a recent episode of Adam Carolla’s “Take The Knee” podcast that not only is he still interested in doing the sequel, but he wants to start filming in early 2016, right after the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
This isn’t the first time Brooks has discussed his Spaceball sequel plans of late—in 2014, August he told Parade Magazine writer Tomas Meehan “has some great ideas,” However, most of them revolve around Dark Helmet, the character portrayed by now super-retired Rick Moranis:
“Without Rick, I wouldn’t do it. I’ve got the helmet in storage, just waiting for him. [Laughs] It’ll fit nobody else. Rick is five-five-and-a-half. It’s a perfect fit for the big helmet. He was such a genius. And God bless John Candy who’s gone. Tom [Meehan], who wrote it with me, has great ideas and I would love to do Spaceballs 2. We even have the title because in Spaceballs I said, “Maybe we’ll do Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.” [Laughs] That’s what I would call it. It’s the perfect title.”
Add that to the fact we recently lost Joan Rivers, the voice of Dot Matrix, as well, and I’d be very curious to see how they plan to get this movie out of development hell and off the ground. Perhaps they could riff off of Star Wars and do a 30-years-later thing with the children of Lone Star and Princess Vespa. Start combing Hollywood for some new talent!
