The nominees for the 26th annual GLAAD Media Awards were announced today, which recognize works that have “fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.” Because genre media can often be forward-thinking and groundbreaking in representation, it should come as no surprise that the things we love here on TMS are well-represented among the nominees.
Outstanding Film sees Benedict Cumberbatch vehicle The Imitation Game nominated for his portrayal of computing hero Alan Turing. In Outstanding Drama Series, we have nominations for TMS faves Game of Thrones and Orphan Black, which is great since Cosima and Delphine are probably the most adorable couple on television.
Doctor Who and Elementary both nabbed nominations for Outstanding Individual Episode (in a series without a regular LGBT character): Elementary for “No Lack of Void,” about the death of one of Sherlock’s closest friends, a gay man; and Doctor Who for “Deep Breath,” in which we see partners Madame Vastra and Jenny kind of kiss? It was a bit of a let-down for me, but hey, it’s better than nothing.
Nominees for Outstanding Comic Book include Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye, Noelle Stevenson and Grace Ellis’s fantastic Lumberjanes, Brian K. Vaughan’s Saga, Kurtis J. Wiebe’s wonderful Rat Queens, and James Tynion IV’s Memetic. Admittedly I haven’t had the chance to pick up Memetic, but I can attest to the fact that the rest of these comics are more than deserving of the award.
Receiving a Special Recognition award is BioWare’s Dragon Age: Inquisition, which – while certainly not perfect in its representation of diverse characters – included characters across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, including the pansexual Iron Bull, and one of mainstream games’ first-ever trans characters, Krem. DAI was also praised by many different institutions as 2014’s Game of the Year, proving that you can make a game with diverse characters that is still hella fun to play.
