In celebration of Tim Burton and Amy Adams’ collaboration on the upcoming film Big Eyes, Annie Leibovitz has honored the pair in a fairy-tale-themed shoot for Vogue that is much darker than previous installments in the series. Yay!
For anyone not familiar with the original Red Shoes fairy tale, consider your childhood a blessed one—it’s the wholesome story of a girl whose legs are chopped off after she’s given perpetually-dancing shoes as a punishment for vanity. From the Wikipedia summary:
Thinking that she has suffered enough for the red shoes, Karen decides to go to church in order for the people to see her. However her amputated feet, still in the red shoes, dance before her, barring the way. The following Sunday she tries again, thinking of herself at least as good as the others in church, but again the dancing red shoes bar the way. Karen gets a job as a maid in the parsonage, but when Sunday comes she dares not go to church. Instead she sits alone at home and prays to God for help. The angel reappears, now bearing a spray of roses, and gives Karen the mercy she asked for: it is as though the church comes home to her and her heart becomes so filled with sunshine, peace, and joy that it bursts. Her soul flies on sunshine to Heaven, and no one there mentions the red shoes.
Yup, totally cool story for kids!
As you can see above, Leibovitz has cast Adams as “Karen,” while Burton is an appropriately creepy executioner/puppet master.
