The 13-year-old girl who made headlines last week for her 70 mph fastball and her historic Little League shutouts (yes, plural) is getting some much deserved recognition from one of the biggest names in sports journalism.
“Last week, this week, maybe next week, she’s owned the sports conversation,” Sports Illustrated managing editor Chris Stone said in an announcement from the publication. “How often do you get to say this about a 13-year-old girl? It’s the easiest type of story to identify as a cover story.”
Mo’Ne is only the 18th girl to participate in the Little League World Series; she’s also the 6th girl to ever record a hit during the World Series (this past Sunday night), the first girl in her age range, and the 1st girl to ever pitch a shutout game—twice. Meanwhile, I still haven’t changed out of my pajamas today. I expect SI will probably want to interview me next. Ayup. Aaany day now.
Speaking of interviews, Davis also be profiled in the corresponding issue that will go along with the Sports Illustrated cover—which, by the way, has never before featured a Little League player until now. Hooray for firsts! While she’s on record as saying that she’d love to see some more female players in baseball, she’s actually more interested in a basketball career in her future.
“To be honest, I never thought I’d be famous for baseball,” she told SI. “I want to play basketball, and I could also do both basketball and baseball—but I really want to play basketball.” Hey, she could do both, though. She could be a new generation’s Bo Jackson!
