Constantine Gets Its Papa Midnite; Game of Thrones, Hannibal Actors Join Brian Michael Bendis‘ Powers

But will he smoke?

Batten down the hatches, ‘cause Papa Midnite is coming to town. Relative newcomer Michael James Shaw has been cast as Constantine’s resident mob boss/voodoo practitioner, originally played in the 2005 movie by Djimon Hounsou. According to USA Today, in the series Papa Midnte will be a “recurring guest role.”

I can’t say anything as to the quality of Shaw’s acting, because this will be his first major role, but look at him wearing that hat. Look at him.

In other comic book-to-TV news, we have some new actors for Powers, a supernatural buddy cop show based on Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming’s comic of the same name. Eddie Izzard, who’s known less for playing the killer Dr. Abel Gideon on Hannibal than for being Eddie freaking Izzard (covered in BEEEEEEES), will be entering the mix as “Big Bad” Wolfe, the ex-mentor and current adversary of Detective Christian Walker. Noah Taylor, who played Roose Bolton’s sadistic lackey Locke (aka Vargo Hoat’s replacement—”YOU THLEW MY BEAR!”) in Game of Thrones and Mr. Bucket in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,  has been cast as the criminal mastermind Johnny Royalle (originally “Royale”). And Olesya Rulin from the High School Musical franchise (and a lot of TV since, but it’s High School Musical—you can’t escape that) will be Calista, “a teenage Power wannabe with street smarts, attitude and vulnerability who is always seeking out her next move.”

Susan Heyward has already been cast as co-lead Deena Pilgrim, though her partner Walker still needs an actor, original choice Jason Patric having backed out since the show was in pilot stage. Ditto Vinnie Jones and Bailee Madison, who originally played Royalle and Calista, respectively. Author Charlie Huston and writer/producer Remi Aubuchon (Falling Skies, Caprica) will be co-showrunners, and David Slade (Hannibal, 30 Days of Night) is directing the first two episodes. The show’s being developed by Sony Pictures TV for the Playstation Network (everybody’s getting their Netflix on) and will debut in December.
