We’re Getting a Genesis vs. SNES Console Wars Movie From Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg

It's a war movie I might actually be interested in. Aside from Star Wars. That counts, right?

Sega or Nintendo? Every kid who grew up in the early to mid 90s (like I did) has an opinion on the subject of the Genesis versus the Super Nintendo. The 16-bit era was a golden age for video games, and pretty much the entire concept of the console wars as we know it started when Sega decided to challenge Nintendo’s dominance, and those of us who fought on the front lines are about to get a Hollywood movie about it.

Console Wars will be based on the book of the same name by Blake J. Harris, and it aims to follow in the footsteps of movies like The Social Network by diving into the behind-the-scenes world of tech business — but probably with a lot more blast processing. The book was based on over two hundred interviews with employees from both companies, so it should provide plenty of material for The Wizard 2 the movie.

Actually, the movie is being produced by Scott Rudin, who was also a producer on The Social Network and is working on the Silicon Valley TV series and a Steve Jobs biopic, so he’s got plenty of experience in the genre. On top of that, he’s tapped Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to write and direct the movie, so it stands to reason that the film will be crafted with love by people who really care about the material.

So, if you want to relive your schoolyard rivalries over whose game console is better, you’ll get that chance soon. Alternately, you could just go read the book (or at least its synopsis) and get educated about the most important war they don’t teach in school, but let’s be honest: when there’s a book version or a movie version, everyone chooses the movie version. Even if that movie version isn’t even out yet, and there’s currently no word on a release date, unfortunately.

Until then, bide your time by watching old Sega ads that are way cheesier than you remember them and for some reason feature Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker as if it’s some kind of selling point:

I’d watch an entire movie just about the ad campaigns.
