You see that? That’s a new Quicksilver promo from X-Men: Days of Future Past. It’s also the reason you’ve just been hit by an inexplicable urge to visit Hot Topic. Don’t blame me. Blame Bryan Singer. Speaking of, he has some things to say about his Days of Future Past follow-up Apocalypse, specifically how it will relate to its comics inspiration and which long-absent mutants might be putting in an appearance. And producer Simon Kinberg answered some questions about Quicksilver in Days of Future Past, including that of whether he’s still Magneto’s who what now?
“The way we conceived [Quicksilver] is a sort of an ADD kid,” says Kinberg. “Everything he does is just popping and zipping around. He doesn’t take anything seriously. He’s not in a situation for more than a few seconds. So it infused the movie with an energy that was really useful for us.” He also explains how Quicksilver fits into the whole time travel plot line, namely that future-Wolverine knows him, so when Wolvie jets back to the ’70s he looks up his friend’s younger self for help. The only way I’ll accept Quicksilver’s maximum bonknosity (warning for autoplay), as shown in promo materials, is if his future self is a super-serious investment banker who views his adolescent disco phase as just as much of an embarrassment as we do.
Further, added Kinberg, “Quicksilver is Magneto’s son in the comics and there may be an allusion to it in the movie, but it’s not something we fully explore yet.”
They could always explore the weirdest father-son duo of all time in X-Men: Apocalypse, also directed by Bryan Singer and coming out in 2016. All that matters to me is that it’s an ’80s period film, but other people care about how close it’ll be to the comics, so, y’know, whatever. Via Entertainment Weekly:
Singer says that the film will be “somewhat” based on the 1990 comic storyline “Age of Apocalypse,” which features ancient villain Apocalypse and imagines an alternate universe. “[The movie] won’t necessarily create an alternate universe, but there may be some swapping things that I’m playing with,” admits Singer…
“You won’t feel at the end of the movie that it set up Apocalypse. What it does is it sets up possibilities. But what we’ll discover in Apocalypse is that events in this movie made that happen.”
Singer notes that James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult have officially signed on for Apocalypse and says he wants to bring in other mutants, specifically Nightcrawler and Gambit, as well: “I’m excited because I want to start introducing familiar characters at different ages and also explore the ‘80s.”
We don’t know whether Singer intends to bring back Taylor Kitsch and Alan Cumming to play Gambit and Nightcrawler, respectively. I imagine Channing Tatum‘s sitting by his phone either way. Don’t you dare let his dream die, Bryan.
