Write Like The Wind George R.R. Martin! [Video]

Watch as Greg “Storm” DiCostanzo and Paul Sabourin beg George R.R. Martin to finish writing Game of Thrones. Come on man, you’ve had 16 years, don’t let the HBO show catch up!

As a writer I find this kind of offensive. Not trolling. Music is great. But if the TV show catches up they should just put it on hold for a year or two. Not a fan of the books or the show, mind you, but I sympathize with Martin. Books take time to write. 16 years isn’t exactly a record.

Putting one of the top-rated shows on air “on hold for a year or two” would be disastrously difficult. The people working on it have contracts, and they can’t just sit around doing nothing. They’ll have to find new work, and new work will hinder their ability to return to Game of Thrones later.

I’ve stood up for GRRM in the past because a snag in the plot is a snag in the plot and I genuinely believed he was doing his best to figure things out, but at this point, the only reason he isn’t making progress is because he’s not sitting down behind his computer and writing. No, he’s taking half a year off to rest from finishing up ADwD, or he’s taking a couple of weeks off to go visit this or that convention, or he’s taking a couple more months off because he has football to watch. That’s not a work ethic I can respect.

The first books he put out fairly quickly.  The last three have taken much longer.  I don’t think the makers of this song think that G.R.R. Martin is their personal performing monkey; they’re just acknowledging how desperate the fans are for more material, more so now because there are so many new fans of the books who were introduced to them by way of the television series.

Heck look at his other series: Wildcards. Thats stopped coming out for like a decade. An unlike Game of Thrones its almost imnpossible to reprint some of those books. Heck one of those books only printed 600 copies.

If people are really that desperate, try picking up the Briar King series by Gregory Keyes. Same kind of Realpolitik, same sort of mysterious forces of darkness, same sort of developing characters just to kill them off, but with a definitive end 4 books in. Also its singificantly more focused on the characters & isn’t so darn padded with last minute failures of characters to extend the series for ever.

Oh, i forgot to mention that one of the main characters is female. Technically quite a few are, but the MAIN main character (who is a princess no less) is the books real break away character. Though to be fair i prefered the mystrerious foreign swashbuckler character… He was just so much fun.

I didn’t say I was owed anything, nor did I demand anything. I just said I don’t respect his work ethic (which is objectively poor).
