Joss Whedon Would Have Loved Another Marvel Female In The Avengers

A lot of people were busy trying to figure out whether or not Spider-Man was going to make a cameo appearance in The Avengers during a recent Twitter chat held to promote the film, but  Joss Whedon let some other interesting information slip during the same conversation. There is another female Marvel character he would have liked to see in the movie. Who is it? Find out after the jump. And oh yeah, we’ll give you the answer about Spider-Man and some other tidbits too!

The Coventry Telegraph highlighted a few choice comments from the entire Twitter chat, one of them, was a question about additional characters.  ”Was there an Avenger you wanted to put in the movie but couldn’t make it work for whatever reason be it budget or time?” Whedon’s answer? ”I’m a fan of the Wasp. She’s goofy and sting-y.”

Yup, the Wasp, otherwise known as Janet van Dyne, one of the founding members of The Avengers.

Excuse for a minute while I go scream into my pillow.

Whedon never said exactly why she wasn’t included in the film, only that he would have liked to utilize her. As someone who talks a lot about how another female Avenger should have been in the film, this makes me incredibly sad for what could have been. But perhaps the film will do very well and he (or someone else) will include her in the sequel.

In other news, what about the rumored Spider-Man cameo? “There is no Spider-Man cameo. But the Avengers do turn off the dark,” joked Whedon. Of course that doesn’t stop the rumor mill, the internet is now wondering whether or not a nameless Peter Parker will appear at some point. There are of course legal issues to Spidey showing up in a Marvel Entertainment film since his rights are currently held by Sony.

Tom Hiddleston, reprising his role as Loki in the film was also part of the chat. “The biggest challenge was magnifying his menace without losing touch of his emotional truth. Keeping his chaos honest,” he said of his turn in The Avengers, also adding that Loki is, ”More mischievous. More evil. More hubristic. More delusional. More damaged. More badass,” this time around.

As for the funniest moment on set, Hiddleston replied, “Getting the giggles when the Hulk smashed. Joss got the giggles too. I was hopeless.”

If you so wish, you can read the chat in its entirety at ComicBookMovie.com.

Whendon didn’t get to pick who was in the movie after all, it was decided before he got the job.

Headline’s confusing. Makes it sound like Whedon wants to romance an additional lady Avenger. Wasn’t one enough, Joss?!?

Would have loved ‘to have had’ maybe?

I’m glad they kept Wasp out of this. The movie is still an origins movie of a kind, with a lot of setup and characters. Most of which have major movies of themselves to back them up. She would have been delegated to a very small role (pun intented). This way, there might be room to tell her story in Avengers 2 (*fingers crossed*)

I think it’s stupid to include the Black Widow and not the Wasp. It should be the other way around.

I would have loved to see the Wasp in this. She’s my favorite Avenger. But yes, the movie is already heavy on characters and Marvel wants to focus on the ones that have been previously established in the movies. Would be cool if Janet and Hank got cameo appearances, maybe as SHIELD scientists, but this doesn’t seem likely.

I am so not a fan of ScarJo, and seeing her as Black Widow in the first place bummed me out. Then, having her in the Avengers movie annoyed me more. And frankly, I’d prefer the Wasp any day – she’s badass!

Marvel Studios was being timid about including the more fantastical elements into the shared movie universe, starting with Iron Man, possibly because Jon Favreau didn’t want the supernatural or super science in his iteration.  Though I can’t fathom how Pym Particles are any more ridiculous than what Bruce Banner can do.  With Thor, they explained it away by saying he was an alien.  They are painting themselves into a corner if they ever want to make a Doctor Strange movie, or Heroes for Hire.  It’s a shame though, because Janet and Hank belong in the Avengers.

Not sure if it makes much of a difference, but in the DVD for the first X-Men, there was an easter egg in which Spider-Man makes an appearance, and even then his rights were owned by Sony and X-Men was with Fox.

So maybe a Spidey cameo could still be possible.

Crying over no Wasp still. She is such a lighthearted, fun character. It would have been interesting to see how she would have changed the team dynamic. At least compared to Black Widow’s bad-ass/ninja/strong silent type thing.
