What's with the name?

Allow us to explain.

Hello Sweetie

Peter Capaldi’s Doctor Who Costume Is Here, And It Is Bangin’

The BeeB just Tweeted this official first look at Twelve’s costume. “He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past,” says Peter Capaldi. “Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.”

BRB, fanning myself. What do you think?

It’s like the John Pertwee costume and the latter Matt Smith costume had a baby. As long as they don’t integrate question marks into it or any hint of 6′s, I think it’ll be fine.

  • Christine Davitt

I do really like it, but it needs a bit of zazz. It seems rather plain to me now but maybe a signature accessory will be introduced later on!

    He looks like a footman.

  • http://twitter.com/amydieg Beastbrarian

Love it! I was hoping they’d do something a little more period looking this time.

  • Madame Hardy

What’s with the tight ankles on the pants? (I’m not up on men’s fashion.)

  • Lady Commentariat

Oh yes. No nonsense, very adult. Hot damn, I can’t wait for the new series and the new Doctor!

  • MissKittyFantastico

Ohh… I like it. Especially the red lining.

  • Bean

I…I need a closer look at this. Because I’m of two minds. On first glance, the red lining on the coat and the dramatic stance looks great-but on closer examination, he’s got some sort of Cardigan vest? And he’s got a white dress shirt buttoned all the way up to the neck?

I am totally fine with the Doctor being older-Even though David Tennant is my doctor, I have a deep appreciation for Christopher Eccelston and Tom baker-But a cardigan and buttoned collar kind of makes me think ‘Kindly Grandpa’ more than rebel time lord.

  • Lady Commentariat

    Very lordly, no?

  • Anonymous

I wonder about the tight ankles + really shiny big black shoes.
Especially because the top of the pants don’t seem fitted. Would have
to see another angle I think.

I dig the top part…there’s a bit of trimmed-down magician feeling to it.

  • Anonymous

Looks like he’s being inspired by HIS Doctor.

  • Gerald Kirby

I’m not wholly impressed by it at the moment. Maybe it just reminds me too much of the 11th’s later outfit. That being said, I don’t hate it. I’m hoping it will grow on me as I see it more.

  • Lindsay Beaton

LOVE the coat. I am also wondering about the tight ankles of the pants, and glad to know I’m not the only one! Then again, all my pants are boot-cut, so I’m predisposed to like my ankles free. :)

I think the lack-of-frills costume means they’re planning on Capaldi being a force to reckon with as the Doctor. Maybe they don’t want any visual distractions from his upcoming brilliance.

  • http://www.mommymisadventures.com/ Michelle Mista

So very Classic-esque but I do need to see it in action. The red lining is a nice touch. I love my Classic Doctors but I’m really not sure what to expect from Capaldi.

  • Anonymous

Maybe frills at the cuffs and collar?

  • Anonymous

You know what it sort of looks like to me? It looks vaguely like Three’s costume, with the red lining in the jacket. It feels very Classic-esque (And I like that the jacket is also purple. Purple is good.)

I admit it’s a fairly simple design, but my favorite Doctor wore a leather jacket and different colored jumpers, so. The costume doesn’t make the man, the man makes the costume.

  • SCP3

The Doctor should have at least a slight eccentric look, and I was never too wild about Nine’s and Ten’s outfits because they were a bit too conventional. This one looks pretty good (it’s like Eleven with a dash of Three), but I think he needs a tie or a cravat; the buttoned shirt without neckwear has been done too many time for me (e.g., Monk, Sherlock on Elementary).

  • SCP3

At first glance, I almost thought he was wearing jodhpurs.

  • locuas

i will miss eleventh’s golden chain from his second outfit. i really think that would have looked cool with this one. Also, i really like pocket watches. i do like that they are going for a more classic look. Also, his finger pose reminds me of Kamen Rider W…and probably only a handful of people here know what that is…

I like the tight ankles – very Punk.

  • Lup Lun

    Oh, you’ve redecorated!

    I don’t like it. >_<

Actually, looking at it a second time, it's pretty good. It's just a little whimsical flourish away from being great. Like Five with his celery, Four with his iconic scarf, or Ten with his sneakers. Something a little childish, to remind us that this is first of all a fun show. As is, it looks so very serious.

  • MissKittyFantastico

Yeah… if I had to give a bit of a negative, I think this would be it. it needs “something”… that unique Twelfth Doctor Thing.

  • MissKittyFantastico

    Definitely

I like the costume okay, but I don’t really see it as “back to basics.” Tennant’s costume was… a suit. Sometimes there was a coat involved as well. Matt Smith’s costume was… also a suit, admittedly an old fashioned one, followed by… another old looking suit. Eccleston’s costume was a leather duster and a jumper. We haven’t really had much in the way of frills or oddities, besides the occasional fez, since the shows revival. Less back to basics and more… continuing with the basics.

  • Faradn

    He looks awesome.

  • Anonymous

I like that there’s a bit of color to give an extra kick.
I don’t want to see 6′s clown suit again (sorry, but combining that patchwork riot of color with his hair was just too much for me) but I’m also a bit tired of all the shades of brown…

  • http://www.tinypinkrobots.com/ Rori

I’m over the moon that they put him in Dr. Martens, I was really hoping for them since they first announced Capaldi. The rest looks good, mature, British, with a bit of a dark edge. The pants are a bit odd-fitting, but that may just be the pose. Overall I like it!

  • Anonymous

They should just put it on the zazz-train to Zazzville.

  • Christine Davitt

Who needs a zazz train when you have a TARDIS?!

  • Anonymous

Nice, but missing something. Needs a flare of color somewhere. Doctor’s fashions have always clashed a little. That makes him the rebel or different. I like the red lining on the coat. That stands out.

  • Tana Siemaszko

Augh, the trous do not fit as nicely as they should. The jacket and the rest are absolutely gorgeous. Someone needs to get a different pair of trousers for this though.

But OMG, fans self, Capaldi is lovely anyway.

  • Tana Siemaszko

Even a red pocket square would be good. To break up all the blue above the waist. Just not a carnation kind of thing. And a Rose would be weird.

  • Katy

I love the red lining! It would be nice to see a little more of it. Maybe a red tie?

  • Travis

I think it’s time to bring back Jon Pertwee’s cape…

  • Luna

If he says the line “Count up your sins” I will lose my shit.

  • Allison Hoekwater

First thought: Those are very ill fitting pants…

  • Lady Commentariat

Maybe the ankle-area of his trousers are bigger on the inside?

  • Cerberus

I like how they did away with the quirk. It’s serious and slightly dark. It looks like something you would envision The Master wearing.

  • Eric Montoya

Love every single thread of it. His Dr. Martens are the icing on the proverbial cake. His look is very reminiscent of Christopher Eccleston’s. Basic, yet effective.

Hrmm. I like the cut of the coat, and I dig the red lining— very Three–
but it’s also all a bit… dull. I’d sort of hoped with Twelve we’d get a
Doctor who merited a stare or two if he just walked down the street,
instead of the more or less regular contemporary menswear of Nine, Ten,
and Eleven. Let’s shake things up, hey?

Like, I know it’s common practice to slag off Doctors Five through Seven for
being too consciously eccentric and ‘Doctorish’ in their costumes (and
I’ll concede the question mark lapels were a little ridiculous), but
come on, now. What’re the odds the Doctor always happens to regenerate
with a taste for fashionable, contemporary Earth togs?

  • larksong4

time to dust off the doc martens and be in fashion again woo hoo

  • Abel Undercity

As long as it’s nothing like Six’s, I am entirely cool with it.

  • Eve

Yeah, I thought the pants looked a little baggy, too. They looked a little like old man pants to me and not in the Eleven-Rocks-Suspenders way.

  • Eve

Yeah, the old man pants, the buttoned up shirt, the vest, and the ankles kind of screams “Old!” to me.

  • Eve

    Aren’t we done with Roses?

  • Tana Siemaszko

That was my point :-) we’re so done with Roses.

  • Kemsley

The whole suit and pose highlights one thing… his crotch… I’m uncomfortable with this… I don’t even know him yet!

  • Anonymous

For those who say it needs a little more zing to it, maybe the back of the coat features rhinestones spelling out THE DOC. Otherwise, yeah, I can see why people would want it to be a little more quirky, but I also kind of appreciate the more serious tone to it.

  • Katy

That mental image just made my day!

  • Melynda

I think he looks spiffy, I like it. I also like that he doesn’t have a tie or anything else to get all annoying with. Matt Smith’s “Bowties are cool” thing got old fast.

  • Lup Lun

    Is three throwing up the horns? 0_o;;;

Well, i suppose his outfit does look kinda metal…

  • Karen K

    A waistcoat! CALLED IT!!

  • Anonymous

I like no ties now. No ties are cool.

  • Christine Davitt

Very good point. :) From the photos and GIFs I’ve seen already, it looks great in motion!

  • Denise Winters

I think the red lining is going to make all the difference. I think it will add a lot of pop when in motion. I also get an early punk vibe from it. I think that all together it will convey steampunk man of adventure/badass professor.

  • Rachel Ripley

really? it’s his face that screams “Old!” to me…
