Eva Green’s Penny Dreadful Teaser Makes Me One Hundred Times More Excited For This Show

And that’s saying something, because I was already pretty excited about Penny Dreadful, Showtime’s Victorian-era “psychosexual horror series” featuring a whole slew of iconic literary villains. Look at that cast and tell me your heart rate didn’t just speed up.

Just out of curiosity, why does this make you “100 times more excited”? I mean, it’s nice, but all it really tells me is that Eva Green is in it. As a teaser, it doesn’t seem that memorable. Don’t get me wrong…the show looks great. But this wouldn’t have sold it for me were I on the fence.

Eva Green. I am completely biased.

Ooh, my likey. I wonder if they’ll have Varney the Vampire?

  • Rebecca Pahle

There was a production diary vid ( where some of the behind-the-scenes folks talked about Varney and penny dreadfuls. So at least they know who he is.

The thing that’s great about this teaser is the look. If you had read the other theMarySue article than it looked sort of like a horror soap opera. Sort of like the old Dark Shadows. This new teaser gives it sort of dark gritty feel. Hopefully there will be lots of overcast rainy days and a grey or green filter.

Can’t wait. I’m glad to see Showtime kept Green on retainer after Camelot was cancelled.

Great– I may have to keep the premium channels.

I HAD read that article, hence “the show looks great”. I was asking about this video, and why Rebecca responded to it so strongly. Which she answered.

*cries of despair* It’s locked from my location!!!

So there’s something called Penny Dreadful in the works without Felicia Day in the lead?

I’m gonna need a ruling on this.

Crucifixes cease thwarting evil once they’re inverted. That’s a pretty big design flaw.

Oh Eva…if you’re there, I’m there. But why so many Victorian Era shows?

Does anyone else really, really wish they had not heard that Dracula, Frankenstein etc. are involved? Does the world really need another rendition of those characters? I was excited about the idea of this maybe being a Victorian England version of American Horror Story … the idea that it might actually be along the lines of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen put a damper on my hopes very quickly. Hopefully (for me anyway) that angle has been overstated.

Actually, the inverted cross is a symbol of St. Peter. The Romans crucified him upside down at his own request because he felt unworthy to die in the same manner as his Lord.

I’m guessing it’s a sign that she’s going to give birth to a son who’s going to be the future pope… ;-)
