Full Police Report Reveals More Information About Comic-Con Incident

Yesterday we published an article originally entitled What We Know About The Comic-Con Cosplay Assault, And How To Help. We later amended the article after police released new information about the incident saying the cosplayer’s injuries stemmed from an accidental fall instead of an assault.

Local News Source ABC 10 published an updated report yesterday, saying

A Harbor Police investigation found that the girl’s injuries “were not the result of a criminal assault, and were likely the result of a fall. Her injuries, and physical evidence at the scene, were consistent with a fall from the distance of approximately six feet.”

Police said investigators reviewed surveillance camera footage, looked at various photos submitted and spoke to community members and Comic-Con attendees in coming to their conclusion.

The 17-year-old cosplayer’s traveling companion, 29-year-old Justin Kalior, was arrested at the scene on Sunday for “sexual contact with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor,” but was later released on bond. In an interview with Polygon, Kalior claimed “the two do not have any relationship beyond a friendship and that he doesn’t know what happened to her. He denied having sex with the victim or giving her any alcohol.” Kalior also said in the Polygon interview that he believed the girl was 20 until the police “searched her purse” and “[her I.D.] stated she was 17.”

Polygon has since obtained a report from Harbor Police through an open records request, including a statement from a witness who claimed Kalior and the girl had “a physical altercation.”

While Harbor Police was speaking with that witness, Kalior returned without prompting. Harbor Police spoke to Kalior and he denied any dating relationship with [the girl] but admitted to bringing her to a party at the hotel that night where there were a lot of alcohol beverages. A consensual search of Kalior’s cellphone revealed a break-up text dated 7/15/14 in which he used her nick-name … and he referenced their dating relationship. A short time later, [the girl] woke up in the hospital and confirmed she and Kalior have been in a sexual/dating relationship.

If there are any further developments on this story we will make updates here.
