How Would You Like To See Buffy’s Fray Come To Life? [VIDEO]

Fans of the Buffyverse are probably familiar with a woman named Melaka Fray. Not familiar? She’s a slayer from the future where we have things like flying cars, but vampires are also unfortunately still a problem. God, Buffy! You had ONE job. I digress. When Joss Whedon wrote the comic, I thought it would make a great movie. Turns out, these fans agree. So they’ve put together a Kickstarter to fund a Fray fan film short called Lurk. I’ll let them explain and show you a bit of what they have in mind but needless to say, I’d really like to see this one happen. Find them on Twitter and Facebook if you’d like to know more.

    YES YES YES!!!

And the director is one letter short of being named just like one of the most awesome characters ever.

But on the downside, Stephanie, although a gorgeous girl with a lovely smile, had me thinking all the time she was on screen “Wow, her arms look like twigs, she’s way too skinny…” :/

  • Eisen

It looks cool, but on the other hand I’m fed up with all those super-skinny, super-pretty heroines that fight in short tops and in clearly visible makeup.

  • Jill Pantozzi

Too skinny for what? Please don’t make comments on the actress’ appearance.

  • Anonymous

I apologise if it seemed like I was insulting, it was not my intent. But I would be grateful that if you ask me not to comment on the actress’ appearance, you would focus on the three things I said about it and not just the one negative.

  • Jill Pantozzi

Saying positive things about her appearance doesn’t make thin-shaming any better. That’s what I took from your comment overall.

  • Anonymous

It also makes no sense to say the Slayer, a superhuman, looks too skinny.

  • Bryan

She doesn’t look any skinnier than Buffy was. So while she may not be your cup of tea, there’s nothing wrong with it in the context of the universe. Slayers are superhuman, they don’t need big arms in order to kick ass.

Actually, while I agree that there is not enough representation of all women of all sizes on tv, in this instance it seems like a particularly pointless comment. Fray in the comics is pointedly not very well built, she is skinny and wirey. In fact, I’ve always had a particular soft spot for her because personally I am a VERY slim person with a very minimal bust (I can’t even count the amount of times people have told me I need to eat some cake – trust me, I eat a LOT of cake), and Fray is a skinny girl – a far cry from the usual super-skinny but ultimately well endowed ladies that I found in other comics. Eg.:

I wasn’t trying to shame anybody, and
I’m sorry if it came off that way.

  • Sarah Eisenstein

Can they do this legally? I mean, aren’t there copyright issues once they start making money?

  • Jill Pantozzi

They won’t be making money in the traditional sense. Like many fan films, they use all the money from the Kickstarter to make the film. No profit. The Kickstarter page explains.

Not really asking for that much, either. Hopefully that’ll make it an easy success! :)

Weirdly, as much as I tend to lean towards the Xena ass-kicking type (When you hit 6’2 by 13… not much chance I’m personally going to look for more fay heroines! lol) when it comes to the Buffy/Slayer world – big wouldn’t actually really fit. One of the big points to “Why is a Slayer a girl, not a 6’8 roided out caveman” is they don’t LOOK powerful. They slide under the eyes of what folks expect to be the Heavy. Also, even though they are supposed to be mystically formed warriors – taking a really really ODD head crank of a turn (yup. I’m about to apply vaguely science-y based reasoning here, right after “mystically formed warriors”. Forgive me, the caffeine has either not kicked in yet, the flu is melting my brain, the caffeine HAS kicked into hyperspeed, or a sad all in one combo) the sheer amount of fuel a body would need to be that strong/fast/flexible/alert always made it seem like it must be something a Slayer’s watcher would have to obsessively monitor. They touched on it a time or two in the show, how hungry Slayers got (the famed H&H). The cheetah affect – few soft curves possible, just whipcord and wire, and that would be stuffing her face every available calorie.

    Serious overthinking here…..

Well now, THIS is relevant to my interests. I quite liked the Fray comics. <3

Something I’m wary of is that you have a few copyright holders to contend with. Joss seems to enjoy when people do stuff like this. I think he even went to one of the Buffy sing alongs. FOX on the other hand, HATES these things and likes to shut them down, and they may own the copyright on the scythe (it’s murky since it appears in both comics and tv show). Here’s hoping FOX is not a killjoy…again.

I love how socially awkward penguin the director is about the actress haha.
