“we certainly would have appreciated a poster with more Scarlett Johansson and less singular body part of Scarlett Johansson” Wholy shit, they did that again! OMG, it’s like the only thing amazing about Black Widow is her mouth. Man, that makes me so pissed off.

…so uh, everyone gets an intense pose for their poster except Black Widow who is a disembodied pair of lips? I wouldn’t mind if it wasn’t the female character getting this kind of treatment Every. Bloody. Time.

  • mildred louis

Normally I don’t care for this but yeah. For some reason it really stuck out to me this time. Everyone gets something epic. Black Widow? OH SHIT SEXY LIPS TIME

  • Anonymous

No lie. Any time I see character posters like this, almost every time it’s a pair of lips for Black Widow. At least this one also threw in a spider?

  • Anonymous

I understand what you’re saying but sadly, the Black Widow really lacks an interesting visual trademark compared to the other characters. And even then, I find the Hawkeye and Hulk posters extremely ordinary.

Hmph, I’ve noticed this too. I’ve seen a few wonderful fan posters, including this one, that I won’t discredit in the least-save for the idea she doesn’t have much to offer outside her lips. In official posters? Her ass.

    Sigh.

I actually purchased this poster, as well as several others, from this artist. But before i did i convo’d him and asked him directly about the use of lips instead of the Widows guns, or something more super hero’ish. To my surprise, he replied quickly, and told me he had done several other designs for the Black Widow, including several with her hand-guns prominently featured. But ultimately decided on this design because he felt that Black Widow’s most powerful weapons as a master assasin were how she uses her sexuality and her verbal skills to manipulate the male villians. Plus, the posters are gorgeous and even though he is talented, he’s still a man. lol.

Actually, the hawkeye poster isnt even in his shop, but i bought the Hulk one and it’s very nice.

If you guys really think about it though, while black widow is a bad ass fighter, her more awesome moments often come when she’s tricking people through what she says. Her words and ability to trick people with them are the poison that inevitably screws her foes over.

“Black Widow’s most powerful weapons as a master assasin were how she uses her sexuality”

That’s the excuse to keep ALL women action heroes hyper-sexualized. It’s a crap excuse after the 1000th use.

”and her verbal skills to manipulate the male villians.”

The Black Widow and Thor ones were the only ones I actually enjoyed. I’d prefer if BW’s poster were the red ‘hourglass’ mark on a black background, though. More badass.

It’s true that her verbal manipulation is her most effective asset as a counterintelligence agent, but lips alone make me think of RHPS or Rolling Stones, and while those are great, a hyper-sexualized rock musical and a gritty, somewhat misogynistic rock n’ roll band aren’t necessarily the best associations for her.

Still an elegant and stunning design, though.

As far as the others go… Cap and Iron Man’s look too silly for me, Hulk’s looks like a photo of a statue, and Hawkeye’s looks too serious for his character.

Thor has a badass one, and I’ve already discussed Widow’s above.

Don’t see how that changes anything I said. The fact that it says “male” instead of just “villains” or “people” means it’s just an extension of the comment on sexuality.

    Better luck next time?

  • mildred louis

That’s not the issue, though. Her lips aren’t showing any kind of sign of cleverness or trickery. They’re just there. I can think of a million and one designs for her poster if they were going for ‘She’s a clever talker” that actually SHOWS that idea rather than it being an isolated disembodied mouth that shows more focus on how nice her lips are than anything else.

It’s disappointing and it’s incredibly uncreative and lazy.

    1. I want the Captain America Poster
    2. I’m just relieved it wasn’t Black Widow’s ass.

I probably would be more annoyed if there wasn’t already a pretty heavy emphasis on ScarJo’s red lips in the film.

COLOR HALFTONE ALL DAY E’RY DAY.

That Thor one is tops, though.

I really found the Hawkeye one to be the most boring and uninteresting. “WOO! He’s.. er.. walking?”. It’s not really attention grabbing.

Captain America also has an extreme face close up. To mainly focus on the A on his forhead.

I think people tend to focus on Black Widow’s lips, more Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow because Scarlett Johansson has amazing lips. Sure, there’s more to the character, but it’s not something you can just put on a poster, and not like this. The rest of them have more things that are easily identifiable.
