‘You were an angel sent from heaven’: She had $40 in her bank account, but she used $27 to save an 88-year-old woman’s grocery trip
Paying it forward.
Kaelin (@whatsinthekoolaid) was a cashier at an undisclosed grocery store when an 88-year-old woman lined up at her checkout aisle. As she was about to pay, the lady almost walked out empty-handed.
“On this one particular day, they had put me on register, and two really old ladies got into my line,” Kaelin told TikTok. She was trained for the service desk area, but management decided to place her at the checkout for that shift.
“They were so sweet and giggly and old and talkative, and I can’t remember what we talked about,” Kaelin continued. But she remembered how the first lady checked out without a hitch. She later distanced herself from the counter. Then, Kaelin began scanning the second woman’s groceries. The second lady’s total was $27, and she reached for her card. But as she turned to the cart for her purse, she noticed it wasn’t there.
The cashier saved her grocery trip
“She starts frantically digging through the cart, and she had her coat tucked in that area where you normally put your purse or a baby—it’s what it’s designed for,” Kaelin narrated. The lady started shaking her coat, but Kaelin said no purse came out. She put it back and tearfully turned to Kaelin.
“I’m so sorry. I don’t mean to hold up your line. I meant to buy these, and I can’t find my purse,” Kaelin recalled the woman’s words. She said the woman looked upset and confused, embarrassed by the situation she found herself in. The woman further explained that she lives an hour and a half away and only came to the grocery store to replenish her supplies with her friend.
“I felt so bad,” Kaelin said. She looked at the $27 total on her register and remembered she had $40 in her bank account. Although Kaelin said she wouldn’t be paid until the next week, she thought it was worth helping the lady. She took her card, swiped it, and handed the lady her receipt.
“I got it. It’s already paid for. Have a great rest of your day, and I hope you find your purse,” Kaelin told her. Because of her gesture, the lady started sobbing harder. She told the woman not to worry. To lighten the heavy situation, Kaelin joked that it would be extra work if she had to put the groceries back on the shelves. The lady left, thankful to Kaelin. She later ended her shift as a cashier.
A heartfelt gesture
Two weeks later, Kaelin went back to working behind the service desk. Then, the same lady appeared, approaching her with a small box in hand. The lady was surprised to see Kaelin, then slid the box across the desk. She said she wanted to see Kaelin open the gift, and the young woman agreed. Inside was a Willow Angel with wire-like wings.
“I’m 88 years old, and the last time we saw each other, the day I lost my purse, was one of the most embarrassing things that’s happened to me in a really long time,” the lady supposedly explained to Kaelin. She found out the woman has no family left, so her friend takes her out for groceries once a week. The lady further explained that she left her purse at home, and she didn’t realize it until she needed to pay.
Grateful for Kaelin’s gesture, the lady said she took a while to pick out a gift for her at the paper store. “I found this and picked it out because you were an angel sent from heaven,” the woman supposedly told Kaelin. The lady, despite her age, waited a week and a half and drove to the grocery store to personally deliver Kaelin’s gift. But after that, Kaelin said the woman never returned to the same grocery store again. Regardless, Kaelin was able to brighten up someone’s day—just like this stranger from Washington who paid for a struggling mother and son’s photoshoot.
