Woman With No Right Hand Gets a Ticket For ‘Holding’ a Phone With Her Right Hand While Driving

Katie (@slightlyoff.balance on TikTok), an adaptive athlete, posted an unbelievable and comedic encounter with traffic police on TikTok. The man said that he saw Katie hold a communication device with her right hand and gave her a ticket. Except he shouldn’t, because Katie doesn’t have a right hand.
She has not a single finger—absolutely no way to hold a phone, which makes the case entirely ridiculous.
“So, you’re going to receive a citation for a wireless communication device, handheld while driving,” the officer said in Katie’s viral TikTok video. He proceeded to hand Katie a ticket and further explained, “You gotta put the phone down as we operate a motor vehicle.”
Katie clarified, “You put on there that you saw me with my right hand holding it, yeah?”
The cop didn’t disagree. “Take it to court, option five on the back of the ticket. That’s how you take that ticket to court.”
To make the point even clearer for the TikTok audience, Katie stood up in her video next to the couch. She extended her right arm and dropped the phone. Did her invisible right hand catch the phone? Did she grow a new hand? Unfortunately not, and the phone dropped on the floor.
TikTok wants to be part of the court case
It’s unclear if Katie told or showed the cop that she no longer has a right hand. She most likely did not, since she didn’t show on TikTok that she corrected the cop. Instead, she only asked the cop if he was certain that he saw her holding a phone with her right hand. If he did see her use a phone while driving, she might’ve been using her left hand.
Or did the cop simply mistake left for right and right for left? Some people are directionally challenged, after all. It could be that, or the cop may need a pair of prescription glasses.
Either way, if Katie does take this incident to court, it’ll probably be up in the leaderboard for the fastest cases dismissed by a judge. The judge might be intensely frustrated by the case, they might opt for an early recess.
One TikTok commenter seems to agree with the sentiment. They wrote, “She won’t even need a lawyer. She can handle this situation single-handedly.” It’s one snarky jab, but it would be difficult to imagine a judge agreeing to discuss the case, especially after seeing Katie’s non-existent right hand. But if they’re in doubt, Katie could just let her phone fall to the ground just as she did in the TikTok clip.
Other TikTok users were asking Katie to take them to court with her, essentially, to document the whole saga. Many more believe that the cop wouldn’t bother showing up to trial.
Being distracted while driving is dangerous, and there are many cases where people collide with pedestrians, other cars, and structures all because they were driving while texting. People who use their phones while they’re on the road are unwittingly putting others in danger for doing so. In these cases, traffic officers are within their right to give drivers tickets or to reprimand reckless drivers.
But in Katie’s case? It all seems like a power trip from a bored officer who probably won’t even show up when Katie takes him to court.
