Woman Tries Haggling Nike Shoes for $20 at an Indianapolis Store. The Clerk Insists That’s Not the Price
She wanted the shoes at less than a fraction of their original retail price.
Hang Time (@hangtimeindytv), located in Indianapolis, Indiana, recorded a transaction between the clerk and a customer in red at the checkout counter. The woman was ready to buy a pair of Nike shoes. But then she started haggling, hoping to reduce the price to $20.
“Your total is going to be $150,” the employee said from behind the counter. The woman’s eyes widened, and then she asked if that was the item’s real price.
“I just saw that it was on sale,” the customer in red asserted. The employee replied, explaining that the original price was $140 with $10 tax.
He further claimed that he told the customer in red about the shoe price when she was picking it out.
“But you said they were $20,” the woman alleged. The employee immediately refused, adding, “That’s insane.” Bargains are everywhere at Dollar Tree, even though the packaging can be misleading, as this photographer suggested. But while this particular store has items on sale, Hang Time isn’t known for heavily discounted prices.
“It’s really not insane. It’s $20—it’s a deal, it’s a steal,” the customer insisted. She argued that people often buy items at a discount, then started complaining about the retail price of the shoes on the counter. She implied that for a pair of shoes that will be “scuffed up within a week,” the price was not worth it.
“I mean, but you want the shoes, right?” the employee asked. The customer agreed, but she said she wasn’t willing to pay $150 for it. To save the deal, the employee told the customer there were other shoes to choose from, some of them priced at just $100.

“But I would like these shoes,” the customer said. However, the item was not on sale, and the clerk insisted she would need to pay $150. The woman refused, claiming that he told her earlier that it was priced at $20. She repeatedly kept saying $20 at the counter, but the employee firmly refused.
“You’re not even bargaining. You’re just lowballing the [expletive] out of me,” the employee said. The exchange got heated, with the customer insisting on the $20 price point. Unexpectedly, the customer started smiling and laughing, still claiming she was supposed to have the sneakers at $20.
“You okay? You need to step out?” the employee asked. The customer seemed frantic over the $150 sneakers. Her voice turned high-pitched as she smiled stiffly at him. She continued, “You said $20,” to the employee.
“I think you need to step out. You don’t need the shoes,” the employee said amidst the customer’s ramblings. In the end, she said it was “extreme” to price the shoes at $150.
“You think somebody would pay that much for a pair of shoes? That will be scuffed up, broken up, damaged within a day?” the customer threw out. The employee replied, “Yeah, a lot of people do.” The clip went viral on social media, with some commenters weighing in on the scenario.
One commenter wrote, “If they’re on sale she probably mistook 20% on sale with it costs 20.” But others were shocked by the customer’s reaction.
Another TikTok user asked, “Is this a skit?” According to the Hang Time bio, these are “retail interactions you were never supposed to see.” The sneaker store’s social media account is known for posting other wild customer interactions. There is no confirmation regarding whether the interaction is a skit.
