Woman says she gave her sister her keypad code to water plants. She came home early and found her sister’s boyfriend on the couch
She asked her sister to water the plants, not plant herself and her boyfriend in the apartment.
Coming home from a work trip early earned one woman an unexpected look at what happened in her apartment when she wasn’t there. Her plants were being watered, her mail was being collected, and apparently, her younger sister had also been staying there with her boyfriend.
Reddit user Jazzlike_Mission_179 says she travels for work about two weeks every month and gave her 24-year-old sister the keypad code to her apartment. There were exactly two reasons to use it: water the plants and collect the mail.
A neighbor had eventually mentioned seeing the sister and her boyfriend carrying bags upstairs one Saturday. When confronted, she claimed he’d only tagged along to water the plants, then responded “obviously” when reminded what the code was actually for.
Coming home early ruined the arrangement
Per her post, last week her meetings wrapped a day early, so she arrived home around 11 p.m. instead of returning Friday as planned. The TV was on. Her sister’s boyfriend was stretched out on the couch, her sister was standing in the kitchen wearing her hoodie, and their bags were sitting in her bedroom.
Then came perhaps the worst possible opening statement: “You weren’t supposed to be back until tomorrow.” Her younger sister admitted that she and her boyfriend had actually been staying there most weekends while the apartment was empty. The plants had apparently been getting a lot more supervision than requested.
The Redditor told them to leave immediately. Her sister asked if they could at least stay until morning, but after traveling since 6 a.m., she wanted her own bed and specifically mentioned wanting clean sheets. The couple was gone by 11:30 p.m. for the 45-minute drive to the boyfriend’s place. She changed her keypad code the next morning
The younger sister wasn’t thrilled about losing her weekend accommodation. The following day, she accused her older sister of humiliating her in front of her boyfriend and treating her “like some stranger who broke in.” The Redditor capped off her post with: “She hasn’t answered any of my texts since. AITA?” Sibling housing boundaries have caused plenty of drama elsewhere, including one woman who refused to let her sister move in with her six children. The Mary Sue was unable to verify the Redditor’s account, and the younger sister’s side is not available.
Reddit is stuck on the audacity of the younger sister
The post drew thousands of upvotes and comments, with plenty of Redditors struggling to locate exactly where the humiliation began. “She took advantage of you and knew she was in the wrong,” one commenter wrote. Another said, “She humiliated herself in front of her boyfriend.”
Some wondered whether the boyfriend even knew the apartment wasn’t available for weekend stays. One commenter suggested the sister may have told him she had permission, while another suspected she “made it sound way more okay than it actually was.” Without his side of the story, it’s impossible to know what he was told before getting comfortable on somebody else’s couch.
Not everyone thought the unauthorized sleepovers warranted such outrage. A handful of commenters said they wouldn’t mind letting a younger sibling use an empty apartment, especially if that sibling was already making the trip to water plants and collect mail. Others pointed out one fairly important difference: those arrangements usually involve asking first.
