Woman Says Her Friend’s Hinge Date Wanted to Stay at Her Place Afterward. She Thinks He Was Treating Her Place as an Airbnb

Emily Durham (@offtheclockemily) has a public service announcement, and she hopes that women learn from it and no longer entertain men who indulge in it. So what does she have to say? In a TikTok video, Durham said that men were now using Hinge as an Airbnb.
Elaborating on how she came to that conclusion, Durham said that one of her very close friends was chatting with a guy and they were hitting it off when the guy asked her friend out on a date. Durham’s friend apparently became very excited about the idea of going on a date, but then he said something that supposedly dampened her spirits.
Durham said the guy suggested that he stay over at her friend’s place because he lived far from her and had prior engagements on Friday night and Sunday. Durham then revealed that the guy told her friend that he wasn’t looking for “anything serious” or “long term” but just wanted to take her out, have a “good time,” and “spend the weekend together.”
While in the video, Durham does not reveal whether her friend ended up allowing the guy to stay at her place, her story serves as a reminder that sometimes people might take advantage of you no matter how cautious you are, like this man did. However, thanks to people like Durham, we can at least hope there is more awareness when it comes to situations such as this.
“They’re Also Using Hinge as Marketing”
Surprisingly enough, some people in the comments section of Durham’s post, which currently has more than 2 million viewers, were already aware of this phenomenon. One user, while adding to Durham’s list, wrote, “They’re also using hinge as marketing for their bands and businesses.”
Another user added to the ongoing conversation about what men on Hinge are doing these days and said, “Oh I had a man I matched with ask me to PICK HIM UP FROM LAX. He said it could be an “epic first date” so it’s Uber now too.” A few others spoke about how they themselves took advantage of other people while using dating apps.
One user commented, “I got a dating app cause I needed someone who could move and back up my trailer. Anyway – getting married in two weeks!! Oh and the trailer has been moved!” Another remarked, “one time i lived on a boat & my engine went out, i swiped on tinder till i found a handy man. he fixed the engine & i got pizza & he was a cool dude. i probably wouldn’t use it as Airbnb, but I do support using the app for alternative motives lol.”
Durham Made Another Observation Related to Hinge
In a video just after the one discussed before, Durham asked men why they were not recognizing that their profiles were scary. “Do you not recognize that when you say, I crave human touch and I haven’t been touched in a while, is an objectively scary prompt?” Durham said.
She continued, noting that one of her girlfriends sent her a screenshot of a man’s profile that read “Haven’t been touched in a while. You can change that.” While expressing genuine shock and disgust toward the incident, Durham said her friend said she was “gonna let the fish picture slide.”
Based on Durham’s observations, there seems to be a trend on dating sites where people are increasingly using them for things other than getting to know each other, let alone dating or establishing a relationship. This can sometimes be a huge bummer for people who are genuinely interested in using the apps the way they were originally meant to.
