Woman Misses Mother’s 5 a.m. Call. When She Receives a Callback, a Man Asks Her Not to Call the Cops
People need to be careful about the information they give out
What’s scarier than an unexpected call from your mother? A 5 am call from her.
Day Marie (@dayynaa) was just going about her day when she suddenly got a call from her mom. That might not sound particularly unusual—her mom is a schoolteacher, after all—but Marie said she still found it strange enough to text her mom and ask if everything was okay when she called a second time.
Then her mother called again, and this time Marie picked up.
“That is so weird for my mom,” she said. She said she could hear her mother sobbing, hyperventilating, and trying to talk but failing.
“And my heart sinks, and I’m like, mom, what is going on? What is wrong? I literally thought my sister, my dad, or my stepdad died,” she says. She mentions that a man then took over the call, and her mother’s crying moved to the background.
Marie reported that the man sounded normal, inquired if she was alone in a private space, and informed her that her mother had something very hard to tell her. “And now I’m like, oh my gosh, is this a nurse? Is this a cop?” Marie says.
Then, when Marie supposedly asked to speak to her mother, the man told her not to freak out or call anyone, especially the cops. He also assured Marie that he wouldn’t hurt her mother but stated that he would “blow her brains out” if she didn’t listen to him.
When the man said this, a switch flipped in Marie’s head, and she said she recalled seeing a video on TikTok showing how people scam others using tactics similar to what she was experiencing with this man. “Some people will use people as hostage that, you know, in your life to get you to send money to them,” she said.
Marie said she went out, checked her mother’s location, and saw that she was at her house. She then texted her stepdad to ask about her location.
The man on the phone then allegedly asked Marie if she had Cash App and PayPal, to which she refused. The man then apparently accused her of lying and hung up.
Marie said she immediately called her stepdad and asked if her mother was with him, and he thankfully confirmed. “I go, holy crap, I just got the scariest spam call of my entire life,” Marie recalled telling her stepdad.

Marie has a simple tactic to combat situations like this. She says greater awareness of the issue must spread through word of mouth or by sharing videos on the topic, including her own. Another way Marie suggests handling the situation is to set up a code word with your family.
Marie’s video has over a million views, highlighting its popularity. It also has more than 500 comments, which paint a concerning picture of the current state of affairs. One user said, “This happened to my mom. She swears she heard me and my baby screaming and she sent them money and everything. It’s insane how low these people will stoop for money. Stay safe!”
Another wrote, “This happened years ago to my grandma about my cousin she was in school and was safe thank god.” A few people, as Marie suggested, spoke about setting a code word with their family.
One person commented, “My family and I have a codeword so if anything like this ever happens, we ask for the code word.” Another individual concurred, saying, “The scams are getting more sophisticated with AI. Please have a safety word with your family to confirm you are actually talking to your family member.”
A few others focused on what was happening with Marie’s vent in the video, with some fearing someone was recording her. “Hi.. what’s this?!?…” a person said while attaching a screenshot of the vent from Marie’s video. Another person asked, “What’s in your vent in the ceiling?”
Marie’s awareness of the issue saved her significantly. Anyone else in her position, unaware of the situation, could have been easily scammed.
