Woman checks into Dallas hotel room. As she is showering, she hears the door open and close, then several seconds later, there’s a man in her room

As a woman traveling alone, there are many things you need to keep in mind. Of course, it’s unfortunate that we constantly have to be alert and anxious about safety, but at this point, there’s little we can do besides stay cautious.
On May 2, 2023, TikTok user @lyndsey_windham shared a video on her account that has gained renewed attention on the platform. In her video, she talks about staying at a hotel during a solo trip, and despite being extremely cautious, she discovered a man inside her room. Her story highlights how women are vulnerable in such situations and how, unfortunately, the burden of protecting oneself often falls on women when the real issue lies with those who commit these crimes.
TikTok user @lyndsey_windham had a scary experience while traveling alone
As mentioned earlier, TikTok user @lyndsey_windham uploaded a video on May 2, 2023, where she discussed a frightening experience while staying alone in a hotel. The day before recording the video, she had stopped by a hotel in Dallas, Texas, and mentioned that she completed all safety checks after arriving and before bed. She also said she had a good night’s sleep afterward.
On the day she filmed the video, she woke up at six a.m., went to the lobby, grabbed breakfast, and took it to her room to enjoy before starting her busy day. After finishing breakfast, she took a shower. She then revealed that she made the mistake of forgetting to deadbolt the door after she returned to her room. While she was in the shower, she heard the hotel phone ringing. Thinking it might be her room phone, despite it being early and unlikely for hotel staff to call, Lyndsey stepped out of the bathroom to answer it. When the ringing stopped, she thought it might have been her neighbor’s wake-up call instead. She then stepped back into the shower again. Later, she heard a faint knock on the door, followed by the sound of it opening and closing. She initially tried to reassure herself that it was her neighbor, but her instincts told her someone was in her room. When she opened the bathroom door, she expected to see housekeeping staff with their cart, but instead, she found a man in her room. The man showed no ID or indication that he worked at the hotel, so she screamed and yelled at him. At one point, he said there was a leak in her room and that he was from maintenance trying to fix it. Lindsey immediately asked him to leave, which he did. The entire experience was incredibly distressing. Lindsey confirmed with the hotel that there was indeed a leak and that the man was a new maintenance employee. Nonetheless, regardless of the circumstances or what he claimed, no one should enter another person’s hotel room without authorization, especially when it’s a woman staying alone.

How are people penalized for unlawful entry?
Entering someone’s private space by force is considered a crime in most parts of the United States because it violates personal privacy and legal boundaries.
According to SJKP Law Firm LLP in Washington, D.C., unlawful entry offenses can lead to fines of up to $1,000 and possible jail time. The severity of the punishment depends on how the offense was committed and whether there are any aggravating circumstances. The source notes that a standard unlawful entry offense under D.C. Code § 22–3302 can be punished by up to 180 days in jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. If the offense includes extra factors such as forced entry, carrying weapons, or acting with others, the court may impose harsher penalties under related laws, like those for burglary, menacing, or group intimidation. These penalties reflect the increased danger and criminal intent involved when unlawful entry is combined with aggravating conduct. For crimes on public property, the maximum fine can go as high as $2,500.
