Wolverine 3‘s Latest Batch of Rumors About “Old Man Logan” & New Characters

The rumor that Wolverine 3, Hugh Jackman’s last go-round with the character, would include an “Old Man Logan” storyline has been swirling for a long time, mostly due to the fact that Hugh Jackman is a human being and therefore not immune to the ravages of time. Plus, doing an “Old Man Logan” story seems like a great way to end the film series and give Logan an organic reason to hang up his claws. It even gives Jackman more opportunities to come back, as himself, and make potential cameos as the “old” version of the character.

Okay, so. This week has also brought a slew of new rumors about X-23 making an appearance in the movie as well. First of all, the new rumored title for the movie is Wolverine 3: Weapon X. Now, Weapon X could refer to anything, but it’s not so strange to believe that it might be referring to X-23, a female clone of Wolverine and one of the other notable members of the Weapon X program.

Story-wise, it makes a lot of sense to introduce Laura. In the current-day comics, Logan’s healing factor has slowed down and he’s firmly in Old Man Logan territory now. Laura has replaced Logan as the All-New Wolverine, and she’s even teamed up with Old Man Logan for Civil War II. If Wolverine 3 introduces both X-23 and Old Man Logan, that movie could end up catching up the franchise to the current comic books a lot faster than anybody would have expected … and that would be great, because the latest X-23 comics have been a thrill to read.

This week, lots of Twitter users have uploaded some covert photos taken on set of Hugh Jackman and a very young female actress who has the dark hair and tough expression that would be fitting of X-23. In the photos embedded in the tweet up top, we can also see the young girl has lots of blood on her sweater; that could be a sign of a healing factor, since the blood looks like it should correspond with some wounds. She looks very young to be taking on the mantle of Wolverine, but perhaps in a few years the actress will be old enough to be joining up with the X-Men. By casting her young, the movies buy themselves some more time to set up her story.

Now, it’s possible that this young girl isn’t X-23 at all and she’s just some other random character … but let me hope, okay?

Thanks to the post-credits scene at the end of X-Men Apocalypse, we know that Wolverine 3 will be about Essex Corp, which means that Mr. Sinister will most likely be showing up. Since X-23 has had more than her share of run-ins with Sinister in the comics, it seems fair to guess that perhaps one of those storylines will show up here.

I love Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, but I’ve already said that I’m more than ready to see him embrace an Old Man Logan storyline and pave the way for someone else to take on the mantle. I assumed that “someone else” would be some up-and-coming guy actor, though. I never dared hope that the movies would end up pursuing an X-23 storyline that the comic books have given us. If the new Wolverine is Laura Kinney, that would be incredible! Obviously this is just a rumor, but it would be so neat to see that it’s hard not to get my hopes up about it.
