Man stunned when his wife unwraps diamond necklace on Christmas morning. Now people are convinced it means she’s divorcing him: ‘This is your job’

A man on TikTok has earned the ire of some TikTokers after “getting” his wife a diamond necklace on Christmas morning. That’s because he didn’t actually get her the gift. His wife purchased it for herself, wrapped the gift herself, and then placed it under the tree for herself, letting him take the “credit” for the thoughtful gesture. It’s led many viewers to ask whether she should serve him divorce papers all on her own as well.
In a video with 363,000 views, Mitch (@user2907753034744) posted his wife, Kelly, opening her Christmas stocking. The video led many viewers to total outrage, as Mitch not only did not get his wife what she wanted for Christmas, but also got her a “bucket of cleaning supplies.” He posted no additional information that indicated that he got his wife anything that she actually wanted for the holiday.
TikTok couldn’t get over how “over it” Kelly seemed in Mitch’s video, leading many to question whether she’s preparing divorce papers for him already. So, has TikTok reached an accurate conclusion about the couple’s relationship? Or, is there more to the story?
What exactly did Mitch do?
In the TikTok, Kelly appears to unwrap the gifts in the video, saying, “This is the big one,” as she messes with the packaging. But he makes it clear by asking Kelly whether or not she bought the gift for herself immediately after that.
“You stuffed your own stocking?” Mitch asked. Kelly said, “Darn right.” She then continued to open the gift she got herself. When Kelly unraveled the small packaging and showed it to the camera, she revealed a pristine diamond necklace. She then calmly said that the diamond necklace inside the box was “to match the other one” she had.
Commenters immediately picked up on her unamused and generally exhausted tone in the video. Mitch asked whether the diamond was real, to which Kelly said, “Yes, that’s a real [diamond].” He asked again, so she reiterated that it was real with a slightly different, exasperated tone.
In a later video, Mitch appears to give Kelly “car cleaning supplies’ in a bucket as a gift. It led many viewers to ask if Mitch was deliberately trying to “rage-bait” his audience. Rage-baiting is especially common around Christmas time, with content creators taking advantage of viewers’ desire to see content with goodwill and flipping it to deliberately create controversy.
Mitch gets compared to other gift givers
To many commenters, Mitch was failing at the “husband” department. That especially rang true for a select group of viewers who had dead family members who either couldn’t get them gifts anymore or set up a system to send gifts their way for years to come.
“I buy myself presents because my husband is dead,” wrote one commenter. “At least mine has an excuse not to go shopping anymore.”
Another person whose father passed away shared, “My dad has been dead for years and I still get presents from him randomly that he set up beforehand. He’s DEAD Mike. What is your excuse fella?”
Likewise, many viewers expressed that this was Mitch’s job. He was supposed to provide his wife with actual, nice gifts on Christmas and not leave her to do her own shopping. It felt like a classic case of weaponized incompetence, as Kelly may have noticed that Mitch wouldn’t have been able to pick out a matching necklace to create a set for her.
That’s one reason why Mitch continuously asked whether they were “real diamonds.” He was so out of tune with what his wife wanted that only she could “technically” get herself a gift. But, it was clear to many commenters that Mitch “could have done better.” The lack of attention to detail seemed astounding to those seeing the video for the first time, who expected him to be more in the loop with his wife’s wants and wishes.
Is Mitch’s wife going to serve him divorce papers?
Based on Kelly’s behavior and mannerisms, many viewers theorized that she was “done” with Mitch.
“She’s already grieved this relationship,” said one viewer. “This is the final calm after the anger.”
Others took a softer, disappointed approach, adding, “Is anyone sad she had to do this? And also angry at him for his reaction. He seems very surprised that she did this.”
But, many viewers insisted that Mitch shouldn’t cry or be upset when the divorce papers come. “Mitch, let’s circle back here when ‘the divorce came out of nowhere,’” wrote one viewer.
Mitch simply replied to the comment, saying, “Sounds good!” There’s possibly more to the story and an explanation for why the couple decided that Mitch wouldn’t be doing Christmas shopping for his wife this year, but he appears to have offered no explanation for his TikTok audience.

Eventually, though, TikTok commenters examined other posts on his page, letting him know that his wife’s divorce glow-up will be amazing on a vacation recap post.
In a comment to The Mary Sue, Mitch said, “The report of my death was an exaggeration.” This is a quote from Mark Twain, which varied from publication to publication. What’s clear in all versions of this quote, however, is that it’s meant to humorously respond to uncertainty. In essence, Mitch may be saying that any issues commenters see with his wife are greatly exaggerated and not based in reality.
