‘We’re officially in the upside down’: Mike Johnson says Marco Rubio was making a ‘joke’ when he said he would infiltrate Greenland

Ever since Donald Trump and his Republican army of goons abducted the Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, they have been setting their sights on other regions they can infiltrate and possibly annexe. One of the regions that Trump and his party have openly expressed interest in is Greenland, a United States ally.
On Sunday, President Donald Trump, while speaking with the press aboard Air Force One, expressed his desire to potentially acquire Greenland, stating that the United States “needs” it for “national security reasons.” As videos of Trump’s ambitions regarding Greenland circulated on social media, it was reported that United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio also made similar statements.
An article from ABC News, published on January 8, 2026, based on information from the outlet’s sources, indicated that Marco Rubio allegedly told lawmakers during a classified briefing on Capitol Hill that the United States is looking to purchase Greenland. Rubio also mentioned to reporters during a press briefing on Wednesday that the idea of the U.S. buying Greenland has always been part of Trump’s agenda.
He told:
Well, that’s always been the president’s intent from the very beginning. He said it very early on. I mean, this is not new. He talked about it in his first term, and he’s not the first U.S. president that has examined or looked at how could we acquire Greenland? There’s an interest there.”
When asked if the United States would use military force to acquire Greenland, Rubio expressed ambiguity in his answer, saying that if Trump identified a national threat during its dealings with Greenland, then he has the right to use the military to eliminate that threat. However, he mentioned that as a diplomat, he and others like him usually prefer to explore different paths of resolution before getting down to serious business.
Rubio might have suggested that he wants to wage a war on Greenland, but Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Mike Johnson thinks that he is joking. When asked to comment on Rubio’s wish for the U.S. to run Greenland and send military personnel to fulfil the wish if required, Mike Johnson replied negatively, mentioning that military troops would not likely be sent to Greenland by the United States. As previously mentioned, he also thought Rubio was not being serious while talking about Greenland, and to substantiate the same, he said that Rubio was smiling when he was speaking about Greenland, which highlights that he was making light of the situation.
