‘Very strong leader’: People are fuming over Donald Trump showering words of praise on a literal war criminal

Throughout his second term as President of the United States, Donald Trump has been consistently offending people. He may not be doing it willingly, but it is something that is bound to happen when you place a man with the intellect of a 12-year-old in such a position of power.
Every other day, Donald Trump does something so whimsical and out of the box that people have no other choice but to hurl abuses at him. This time, the circumstances are not too different. He is currently receiving flak from Americans over his alleged friendship with Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, whom he hosted at the White House for business discussions on November 10.
Following their meeting, Donald Trump was asked by journalists for details on the outcomes of their conversation, but he refused to divulge them. Instead, he showered words of praise on Ahmed al-Sharaa and remarked that he was a “very strong leader” and a “tough guy.” Trump also said that he likes him a lot and gets along with him well.
As videos of Trump appreciating Syria’s current president began to circulate on social media, people criticised Trump for attempting to forge a relationship with an individual as controversial as Ahmed al-Sharaa. For those who may not know, Sharaa was the head of al-Qaeda’s official faction in Syria up until 2016, owing to which, for the longest time, he was identified as a terrorist by the United States government. Trump hosting him at the White House is not only atrocious but also insulting to all those people who had permanently established Sharaa’s position in the American landscape.
One person on X (formerly Twitter) while discussing the incident wrote:
“Trump will probably give Syria 100 billion but refuse to give food stamps to Americans and refuse to lift the punishing tariffs that are costing each American household $2400.00 annually.”
Another one wrote:
“Trump’s praise for al-Sharaa overlooks HTS’s documented atrocities, raising concerns about U.S. complicity in normalizing a regime with a history of human rights abuses.”
Several others echoed similar sentiments of disapproval over Trump’s relationship with Ahmed al-Sharaa.
