Tor Books’ #FearlessWomen Initiative Encourages Everyone to Read More Women in Science Fiction

Recommended Videos

Despite Mary Shelley being the mother of the science fiction genre that we know of today, science fiction is still largely seen as a man’s playground. Thankfully, places like Tor are going above and beyond to promote women in books.

Tor has released their #FearlessWomen campaign to promote their upcoming books that feature powerful female characters by female writers.

According to Tor: “Women are shining in every genre of speculative fiction, and it is no longer enough to say ‘Women are here.’ Instead, #FearlessWomen everywhere are taking a stand to say ‘Women will thrive here.'”

Beginning this summer, meet a new generation of #FearlessWomen who are shaping new blockbuster worlds –   and re-shaping our own. Highlighting major titles from bestselling authors V.E. Schwab, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Jacqueline Carey as well as titles from acclaimed and debut authors such as Mary Robinette Kowal, Tessa Gratton, Sam Hawke, and Robyn Bennis, #FearlessWomen will be a coordinated social media celebration encouraging fans to start a dialogue about women in publishing, their worlds, their voices, and their unique stories.

Tor Books’ handles across FacebookTwitter, and Instagram (@torbooks) will be using the hashtags #FearlessWomen (and #FearlessFantasy and #FearlessSF) to promote excerpts, exclusive content, quizzes and giveaways beginning in May. We’ll also have exclusive giveaways at BookCon, San Diego Comic Con, and New York Comic Con. Follow Tor Books online, join the conversation – and get reading!

Not only am I fan of this because it is important to get people reading more books about women, but by using the hashtags and other social media, it will make people aware that it is something that people want more of. Right now, we are living in an exciting time where the desire for diversity in books is no longer treated like a fringe marketing opportunity, but as a real movement to showcase other voices.

In addition to tweeting about the books you are reading, I’d also encourage people to tweet about the books they want to read and the kinds of fearless women that deserve to be a part of this conversation.

You can find out more information on the Tor Books blog.

Who are some of your favorite #FearlessWomen in literature? And remember they don’t have to always be warriors to be fearless.
