‘This must stop’: Mark Kelly is in absolute disbelief as Donald Trump proves there’s no limit to how low he will go
A question of ethics in war.

Senator Mark Kelly expressed absolute disbelief on April 7, 2026, over President Donald Trump’s latest statement that “A whole civilization will die tonight,” emphasizing in a post on X that such words had never been uttered by a President of the United States before this morning. Kelly, a seasoned veteran with a 25-year career in the U.S. Navy, forcefully stated that Trump’s behavior is unhinged and actively makes Americans less safe.
He made it clear that throughout his extensive military service, he had never encountered anyone who so completely lacked the fundamental qualities of good leadership as Trump. Kelly’s strong message highlighted the grave consequences if Trump were to act on his threats. He believes countless Iranian civilians would perish, leading to a massive escalation of the ongoing conflict.
This action, Kelly pointed out, would cause the United States to be perceived as a country devoid of a moral or ethical compass on the global stage. Such a perception would undoubtedly make Americans less safe in the immediate future and put the lives of thousands of service members at risk.
Kelly raised the alarm about drastic consequences if Trump followed through with his threats
The senator underscored that these potential consequences would inflict a lasting and deeply damaging effect on the nation as a whole. He firmly believes that while Trump’s past mistakes have led the country to this perilous juncture, further escalation is not the answer. He declared, “This must stop.”
The senator’s strong comments came in direct response to a Truth Social post from Trump earlier on April 7. In that post, Trump had written, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?”
He continued, “We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!” This statement from the president has certainly raised serious concerns among many.
According to The Hill, earlier on the same day, Kelly had already taken to X to voice his concerns regarding Trump’s threats against Iran. He tweeted that threatening to target power plants and other non-military targets does not demonstrate strength. Kelly argued that if those words were to translate into orders to destroy civilian infrastructure without a valid military purpose, it would be difficult to see how they would not violate the laws of armed conflict.
He believes America leads best through strength, discipline, and professionalism. The senator also stressed that illegal orders designed to make civilians suffer would leave a significant black mark on both the military and the country.
This earlier tweet from Kelly was prompted by a hugely condemned Truth Social post from Trump on Easter Sunday. Trump had stated, “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the F‑‑‑in’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah.”
Trump’s aggressive pronouncements have been a consistent feature of his communications on Iran
The U.S.-Israeli war on Iran recently entered its second month, marking a period of intense military and diplomatic tension. Trump has issued multiple threats concerning the Strait of Hormuz in recent days. This strait is a crucial passage for the global oil industry, and it has been effectively closed since the conflict began, causing significant disruption to international trade and energy markets.
The president’s threats, particularly those targeting civilian infrastructure, have elevated the already high stakes of the conflict. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly provided a statement on the administration’s position, asserting that “the President is using all of his constitutional and lawful authorities to protect our homeland from the short- and long-term threat posed by the terrorist Iranian regime.”
This statement aims to contextualize the president’s actions within the framework of national security. However, it does not directly address the specific concerns raised by Senator Kelly about the legality or morality of targeting civilian infrastructure.
Senator Kelly’s current opposition to Trump’s directives is not an isolated incident. Late last year, he found himself embroiled in a dispute with the Trump administration over a video. In that video, Kelly and five other Democratic lawmakers explicitly advised military service members against complying with “illegal orders.”
This history indicates a consistent stance from Senator Kelly regarding the importance of adherence to military law and ethical conduct, even in times of conflict. His background as a retired Navy captain gives particular weight to his statements about military professionalism and the laws of armed conflict.
The senator’s message is clear: the path of further escalation, particularly through threats against civilian populations, is dangerous and counterproductive. He genuinely believes it undermines the safety of Americans, jeopardizes the lives of service members, and erodes the nation’s moral standing globally. His plea for a halt to these actions reflects a deep concern shared by many for the long-term repercussions on the United States and its military.
