‘I ship it’: ‘The Pitt’s Shabana Azeez on Victoria Javadi’s potential season 2 romance

You can’t have a medical drama without a little (potential) romance, even when that medical drama is set during one grueling, 15-hour shift. Max’s The Pitt has enthralled viewers with its high-stakes, realistic portrayal of a day in a busy Pittsburgh emergency department. The show wouldn’t have been nearly as satisfying to watch if not for the characterful staff members of the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital, though.
One such staff member is Victoria Javadi (Shabana Azeez), a third-year medical student determined to carve out a path separate from her mother, a world-class surgeon who also works at PTMC. That’s not all Javadi has to deal with, though. Victoria also has a crush on one of her colleagues, the kind and handsome Nurse Mateo (Jalen Thomas Brooks), who works alongside her in the ER. Despite everything going on in the emergency room, fans have latched on to Javadi’s and Mateo’s fledgling relationship—especially after she asked him out—and everyone’s hoping to see their potential romance progress in The Pitt season 2.
Shabana Azeez spoke with The Mary Sue’s Rachel Leishman recently to discuss The Pitt’s first season, analyzing the pros of filming in chronological order, Javadi’s relationship with her mother, and potential narrative arcs for the second season. Of course, we couldn’t let the actress go without asking about Javadi and Mateo, either.
Mateo has a firm rule against dating his co-workers, but does Azeez hope he’ll be willing to break that rule for Victoria in season 2? “I ship it. And you know what? When Victoria puts her mind to things, she gets things done. She seems pretty … determined. I believe in her, so I believe in them.”
Things seem to be looking up for Victoria, as Mateo did invite her to have drinks with everyone in the season 1 finale, so who knows? Maybe, as they spend more time together, both in and outside of the ER, love will blossom. I mean, the least we can hope for is a kiss, right? There will be a time jump, after all.
