Netflix has announced that 2021’s The Green Knight will be coming to its platform on Sunday, March 1st. Additionally, the film will be available to stream for free on Kanopy, a streaming service that is included with a number of public library memberships.

Directed by David Lowery, the film tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger.

The cast of The Green Knight also includes Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Barry Keoghan, and Ralph Ineson. While the film was a modest success at the box office when it initially debuted in 2021, it has since become a fan favorite… which this new streaming presence is sure to help with.

What Is David Lowery’s Next Movie?

The Green Knight finding a new streaming home also coincides with the release of Lowery’s next film, a psychological drama known as Mother Mary. Initially announced in 2023, the film is set to debut in theaters this coming April… and the first teaser trailer has already left parts of the Internet shook.

According to the studio’s official description for the film, Mother Mary follows the psychosexual affair between pop singer Mary (Anne Hathaway) and fashion designer Sam (Michaela Coel) after the former’s need for a dress for her new tour draws them back together.

“I wrote the first 20 pages when I was shooting ‘Peter Pan and Wendy’ and it’s been percolating ever since,” Lowery explained during a panel at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in 2024. “That movie was huge, it was one of the greatest shoots of my life and one of the hardest edits of my life and it inspired a lot of soul searching. After that, I decided I’m just going to do something simple. I need to do a movie with just two actors in a room having a long heart to heart … a really gentle filmmaking experience. But then I thought, ‘What if one of those characters is a pop star? And what if we started at a stadium? Then it got bigger. And again, it wound up being the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”

Mother Mary also stars Hunter Schafer as Hilda, Sian Clifford as Jade, Atheena Frizzell as Emily, Jessica Brown Findlay as Tessa, Isaura Barbé-Brown as Kyla, and FKA Twigs, Kaia Gerber, and Alba Baptista in currently-unknown roles. The film will feature new original music from Jack Antonoff, Charli XCX, and FKA Twigs.

“I’m in the edit right now and I have been wondering, ‘what is this movie?,’” Lowery previously said of the film in a 2024 interview with the podcast The Last Video Store. “I know what I set out to make and that is indeed what I’ve made, but it is so wild. It is a movie I am sure will provoke a lot of strong feelings, in every possible direction. It feels very true to who I am, and very close to me, but it is also consistently surprising me in ways that I did not anticipate. What I’ve got on my computer now is probably pretty much what it’s going to be, it will just get cleaned up.”

Mother Mary will be released exclusively in theaters on Friday, April 17th.
