The First Teaser Trailer Has Been Released for Colleen Hoover’s New Psychological Thriller

Fans of Colleen Hoover won’t have to wait long for another page-to-screen adaptation for the author. Amazon MGM has released the trailer for Verity, the twisted thriller from the prolific author. This marks Hoover’s fourth novel adaptation in two years. Her three prior films were It Ends With Us, Reminders of Him, and Regretting You, all of which were box office hits.
Verity follows renowned author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway) and Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a struggling writer who relocates to the remote Crawford estate to ghostwrite for Verity. After Lowen uncovers what appears to be Verity’s chilling autobiographical notes, she wrestles with the disturbing and twisted confessions about Verity’s husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett), and finds it hard to separate fiction from reality, manipulation from attraction, and opportunity from obsession.
The teaser opens in Lowen walking the halls of the Crawford home in a billowing white satin robe. She makes her way to the makeshift bedroom, where Verity is asleep, and diverts towards where Jeremy is watching TV on the couch. With Verity out of the picture the two quickly spark up a romance. But as they kiss, Lowen notices that something is wrong. Suddenly, it’s Verity she’s kissing, not Jeremy. The tone of the trailer quickly shifts from that moment on, ramping up the pervasive feeling of unease.
“Even with my generous warning, you’re going to continue to ingest my words,” Verity warns Lowen in the trailer. “But know one thing: there is no light where we’re going. Darkness ahead.”

Hoover takes a turn with Verity, focusing not just on romantic complications, but seeing them through the lens of a seductive, psychological thriller. Given her built-in audience, this will likely be able to draw in more fans who may not have been interested in her previous films. And with the success of It Ends With Us, which exceeded a $351 million worldwide gross, it doesn’t seem like Hoover’s fans will be going anywhere any time soon.
The first trailer for Verity was revealed at CinemaCon earlier this month. However, the official teaser released by the studio is not the same as the one con-goers saw. Though the reason is unclear, it is possible that the studio will wait to to use that footage when they release a full, official trailer in the coming months.
Verity hits theaters October 2.
